LOCAL beauty and brains Riona Rajkumar will be representing Pietermaritzburg in the Mrs India SA pageant at the Sibaya isiZulu Theatre next month.

Rajkumar was crowned queen at the Midlands Miss India SA in 2007 and after six year’s of marriage, is now aiming to bag the Mrs India SA title.

An investment specialist for Nedbank, Rajkumar said this pageant is not only about external beauty but inner beauty as well.

“Being a finalist in the Mrs India SA pageant has been a remarkable journey of self-discovery and a practice of self-less service to my family, friends and larger community. Being a finalist has created a gateway of opportunities as I have become more recognised in society as a woman with purpose and through my experiences I have been able to add value to the lives of many,” said Rajkumar.

The Bellevue beauty is a mother to a three-year-old son and is the brand ambassador of women and youth empowerment organisation, Vishwa Shakti. She recently completed her MBA degree in investment banking and has started a project called “Sunshine”, which encompasses all programmes aimed at creating light, hope, love and compassion to all.

“Many women experience difficulties and challenges, and are victims of abuse. Yet, just lending an ear and a helping hand can make a significant difference. An empowered woman grows to help and serve the youth, men and women as well as the elderly …

“My preparation for the pageant was not a journey I made alone. My friends, family and other groups in society support my cause for making a difference in the community and it offered me a greater appreciation of self,” she said.

Looking up to her mother, Anusha Maharaj who suffers from multiple sclerosis, Rajkumar said she has always been her “pillar of strength”.

“Although my mother suffers with this she has always been brave and courageous. She inspires me,” she said.

The Mrs India SA pageant will take place on August 15 at the Sibaya isiZulu Theatre.
