Long wait for meds in Eastern Cape

2013-01-16 11:23

Johannesburg - Patients at the Cecilia Makiwane hospital waited for more than a day for medicine from the hospital's understaffed pharmacy, according to a report on Wednesday.

The Dispatch Online reported that pharmacists complained about "unbearable" working conditions caused by staff shortages.

Dr Rolene Wagner, Frere Hospital's CEO, confirmed that the Cecilia Makiwane hospital's pharmacy was operating with only half the 18 pharmacists and assistants it should have.

She said staff had been seconded from Frere to help with the load.

Some patients said they arrived before the pharmacy opened, but often left without being helped.

The pharmacists said efforts to talk to the hospital’s pharmacy managers had failed.

On Tuesday, more than 100 patients were waiting for medication. They said they had been waiting for hours.

The pharmacists were still serving patients who had come for medication last week.

"We never finish with the patients. Every day it is crazy busy and when we get to work we have to finish up the undone work," another pharmacist told the publication.

This is nothing in comparison with my father that's waiting for months for diabetic medicine at Tzaneen hospital and clinic.

Maggie the gov hospitals have always been busy and very long winded with a roll of red tape, when its comes to service but in all the years i have never heard of it been so bad, i mean that poor guy waiting to amputate his foot in middleburg, there is only one fix here and it will not be a fast one most likly not in my life time but the public need to think at the next election vote in someone new and if there is no improvement vote them out and vote in a new party at the next election, but believe me this country has never been so bad as it is under the present gov they have no clue.

Same story is happening at the clinic in Despatch, only one lady is working in the pharmacy and she is trying to cope all by herself.
