Johannesburg - Fifty hectares of land with serviced stands have been donated by platinum producer Lonmin for housing in Marikana, Human Settlements Minister Connie September said on Tuesday.

"This deal will help address the critical shortage of appropriate and affordable accommodation in the area," she said in a statement.

"[This] fulfils our core constitutional mandate of delivering adequate housing and basic services to communities living within the greater Rustenburg municipal area."

The project - a collaboration between Lonmin and the department - was due to start in June 2014.

Lonmin chief executive Ben Magara said: "This donation forms part of our commitment to support the presidential initiative to improve living conditions in Rustenburg."

The platinum producer pledged another R500m over five years towards employee accommodation.

North West officials welcomed the initiative.

"We welcome Lonmin's donation of land as this will support the government's human settlement initiatives, and assist the North West province to address the need for shelter and related services within the greater Marikana area," said Human Settlements MEC Nono Maloyi.
