Lonmin security tightened for march

Rustenburg - Security was tightened at Lonmin's Marikana mine on Wednesday in anticipation of a march by mineworkers.

Additional mine security guards and police patrolled the area from dawn.

On Tuesday about 200 mineworkers met at the eastern mine's shaft 30 and tried to get their colleagues to stop working. Another march was then planned for Wednesday morning.

There was no sign of the marchers by 08:00.

Police in armoured vehicles also kept an eye on nearby Nkaneng squatter camp in Wonderkop.

Talks between worker representatives, unions, the labour department and management were expected to resume on Wednesday in Rustenburg.

Workers have been on strike for the last three weeks, demanding a monthly salary of R12 500.

On August 16, police fired on a group of protesting workers near the mine, killing 34 and wounding 78.

Another 10 people were killed earlier that week, including two policemen and two security guards.

But they got full pay, they still have their jobs and those criminal where released without any consequences. All in the name of peace. Pease? These same workers don’t know this thing called peace. What did Lonmin expect? Thankful workers? Fire the lot and give the jobs to people who want to work.

Axes and spears again. Should the police just turn the other cheek? These strikers still haven't listened. Violence breeds violence. AIM, READY, FIRE!!!!

I only wish that these workers wake up sooner than later. No production = No income = No increase in salary..... Final step : CLosure of mine all together =job losses. Then what will you do? Strike to reopen the mine? Please poeple use that thing called a BRAIN and THINK DAMNIT!!!!!!!!!!

I don't agree with that massege, lonmin it will be better they close this mine and go,we will not be the loosers, this company is benifing from minerals but we are still poor and poorest, the looser is the company b'cause they loosing the production,we are saving our energy,b'cause we work hard at a overheating condition, they are loosers b'cause they cankt get a r18 million to buy a buffalow any more!

rhulani you dont understand the cause and effect of what you saying there. You dont think what the mine is worth indirectly to the comunity than just your own pocket... should that mine close all the workers is jobless thats a obvious conclution... but now you dont have a job meaning you cant pay your bills, meaning you cant buy bread or send your child to school... now since you cant send your child to school the school closes down or the shop around the corner closes cause he cant buy new stock. how much money has the mine pour into the comunity building hostles, adding infrastuctures there that lore the people there from all over africa... its not just you as the miner or the mine owners thats affected its the whole of comunity, if no one works what do you think the crime is going to look like? as people will steal from their best friends to buy a bread?

Mozambiquens works 4 times as hard and a quarter (and less) of the price. Why do you think your resources will be moved through Mozambique to China and India? If South Africa is smart they will hire those Mozambiquen workers now.
