Lotter believed she was 'next victim'

Durban - Double murder accused Nicolette Lotter suspects that she might have been the next one to be killed, she told the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Durban on Tuesday.

Lotter, 29, who has denied murdering her parents, said the mastermind behind the plot, her then boyfriend Mathew Naidoo, had got her to stab her mother Maria Magdalena "Riekie" Lotter and her brother Hardus to strangle their father Johannes Petrus "Johnny" Lotter with electrical cord.

This was after Naidoo's original plot - to knock their parents out with a taser and inject air into their veins to induce heart attacks - went wrong.

After the murders Naidoo, now 25, is alleged to have told Hardus that he should commit suicide.

Hardus' lawyer Roland Parsotham, put it to Nicolette that if her brother had committed suicide it would have looked as if he was to blame for the double murders and the secret of what actually happened would go to the grave with him and that Nicolette and Naidoo would be "smiling all the way to the bank".

Nicolette said that it would have been Naidoo who would be smiling.

She said that thinking about things while in prison later she did not think she would have been alive too much longer after the murders.

Naidoo already controlled her finances and had her bank card and when her parents' money came in he could easily get rid of her.

She had no friends and if her body was left in the bush no one would go looking for her.

"He and his mother [Rita] would be rich," she claimed.

Nicolette told the court on Monday that she believed Mrs Naidoo was the real mastermind and would benefit financially from the inheritance following the murder.

Naidoo had told her and her brother that he was the son of God, that God wanted their parents dead, and he was entitled to the money.

He had even made them take out a vow of property.

Asked by Judge Shyam Gyanda what would happen after the murders, she said Naidoo would inherit all the money "because he was the son of God and it was God's will".

She was going to marry Naidoo who was also going to have a second wife which she had to consent to as it too was God's will.

In hindsight, she realised Naidoo used subtle manipulation, telling them things against their parents to separate her and her brother from them.

She believed all he had said about them as it came from God, she said.

He had done this because he wanted to achieve his ultimate motive which she now realised was to get the money.

He wanted to destroy the closeness that she and her brother had with their parents as they would never have consented to commit the murders if they had remained close to their parents.

Even though she loved her parents, murdering them was an instruction from God, she said.

"My destiny was set... this came from God... I had to abide by it," she said.

Nicolette recalled that her brother had been an unwilling party but was manipulated by Naidoo who punched him and said he would never be a man if he did not kill his father.

Her brother was not a cold-blooded killer and had taken no joy in what happened.

She admitted she was partly responsible for his predicament.

She agreed with the judge that if he had been left to his own devices her brother would never have become involved.

"You could say that this is not even in his character to do this," she said.

Asked why she had no shown no emotions during her evidence on Monday she said she had learnt to bottle up her emotions in prison.

NOTHING can make you go against your base instinct and TORTURE and KILL parents that you love and cherish. Only if you are a psychopath could you do something like this. So sorry girlie - you need to fry for what you've done!

    Satanism+hatred = their culture

      ianmichaelcalder - 2012-03-06 18:23

Unfortunately it seems that hatred is the culture, and you can paint any religion you like on top of that. It seems that there are plenty of sick people with way too many human rights breathing oxygen right now.

      Simnikiwe - 2012-03-06 18:23

      are Sangomas satanists?...

      Duncan Thabiso Mphailane - 2012-03-06 18:47

@Simnikiwe you seem be confused... There's a BIG difference between isangoma and umthakathi. Don't be ignorant!

      Simnikiwe - 2012-03-06 19:08

@Duncan, skeem Im not confused at all, sangomas do withcraft too, but for "good" . Whilst "abathakathi" do it for bad reasons. Whitchcraft is satanic whether its for good or bad reasons.

      ianmichaelcalder - 2012-03-07 09:06

I hate to be the "ignorance police" here, but witchcraft is not necessarily satanic. Wicca as an example has nothing to do with praising satan as a higher power. Don't assume that everything that isn't christian and is morally borderline or wrong, is actually satanic. That being said, the old testament of the christian bible got things right here, but saying an eye for an eye. This willing participant in a monstrous act should be decapitated quietly at the back of a prison in a nameless gully and be buried upside down, along with whomever is conducting these ceremonies.

I think her head should be kept in the fridge, to avoid more murderers. Who is the sangoma who can help me to get her head? Francios.....?

Just shows you how religion can mess people up.

      violet.bossut - 2012-03-06 19:08

No religion has ever told anyone to murder. It is stupid people that put words and deeds into other people's minds. If your head is screwed up then you will believe religion is bad

      ianmichaelcalder - 2012-03-07 09:09

My head must be screwed up then, because like it or not, religion is interpreted by followers, and those followers have for the past few thousand years been killing people in the name of religion. Don't be quite so short-sighted to forget that the crusaders weren't just a New Zealand rugby team.
