M1 closed after accident

2012-07-16 10:17

Johannesburg - All northbound lanes of the M1 near the Woodmead offramp were closed on Monday after a man was killed and 18 others injured in an accident, Gauteng paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said a taxi and car collided just after 06:00.

"All the lanes had been closed for the helicopter to land on the highway. It is believed the taxi veered off the highway and down an embankment after the collision with the car."

One man was declared dead on the scene. Another person had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital.

"The other 17 injured who sustained various injuries were transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment."

I was stuck in this traffic this morning ON THE M1 SOUTH! PLEASE raise the centre barrier so people would stop rubber-necking and have ALL taxi's checked for road-worthyness every 6 months to preserve some lives!

Yes, the idiots are so busy staring they forget that they are driving. What a lot of tools.

Taxi's AGAIN..........not a day goes by that we dont have a or a number of TAXI accidents. When are they going to stop this and regulate this industry. These taxi drivers are a lawless bunch. Government sees it as a money making business .....hand washing business so who actually cares about the people being injured or killed, thats there answer.

      manny.dasilva.334 - 2012-07-16 12:38

Do you know how many taxis there are on the roads? Do you know how many people they transport in a day? I didn't think so....

  • IcemanGP - 2012-07-16 10:51

Bladdy JMPD who are too scared to actually police traffic and taxi's in particular. They would rather illegally trap unsuspecting motorists from behind and send you the fine months later.

Well am just gonna ignore all racist and send my message of sympathy for deceased's family and a speedy recovery for the injured.

      jackie.stone.501 - 2012-07-16 11:45

Micky Mouse a person has died and plenty with injuries, that is overlooked as if other people's death is a non-issues

      eil33nn - 2012-07-16 11:57

It could have been a white person that drove the other car...and that could have been the person who was killed... Yes the accident was horrible and a person died. But the cause of the accident was due to an unroad-worthy vehicle most likely and that is what i am complaining about. Don't make something racial when YOU don't have the facts.

      jackie.stone.501 - 2012-07-16 12:22

@eil33nn Who said it must have been black people for it to be racist?

  • lebogang.molefo - 2012-07-16 11:01

I saw that accident on my way to work, gruesome sight... R.I.P to the man who passed away and hope all the injured get better....

there is something wrong with south african drivers not a day goes by without a report an accident..

      manny.dasilva.334 - 2012-07-16 12:40

Few obey the rules of the road, and even fewer enforce the rules of the road. What do you expect?

      mpho.e.mogashui - 2012-07-16 13:32

a deeper study has to be undertaken and a comparison be made with other developing countries to see how this can be curbed. we have one of the best roads in the world or death traps... whos gonna be next ..taxis or no taxis this is a south african problem.

ANATHER TAXI ACCIDENT AND FATALITY???? When are they going to treat these the same as Mine Accidents????

  • bakers.dozen.14 - 2012-07-16 11:36

In the rest of Africa they are wise enough to use double rear wheel diesel taxi's and 50 seater mid sized busses which can’t travel at high speed and can carry the load on the larger tyres supplied. Not like our COOl taxi driver that is allowed to down sizes the tyres to 14inch, a cheap retrofitted tyre now being fitted to the Quantums instead of the 16 inch that they are supposed to use. Naturally they can’t keep the 3 tons under control with these tyres. That’s not to mention the attitude problems that the drivers have due to poor driver education and lax policing.

It is unfortunaty for South Africa to be one of the leading road accident country in Africa if not the world. My friend who is a daily sun reporter told me that every day 30 - 40 people die on our road and this number is similar to Afghanisatan and Iraq due to war. RSA got top of the rage road network - its sad that every day we are losing business men/women, farmers, students and politicians who would bring change to the lives of the country. Based on my research I have found that - we the road users we abuse the road, we don't plan when going in the road, we got no direction of where we r going, we get angry with anybody trying to overtake, lack of patience, rudeness, abuse of alcohol, family and work problems bring a whole lot of stress. many men and women we see in our roads are stressed to death due to marital and financial and they take this into our roads and cause loat of havoc and leave a lot of poverty after the death of the bread winner/employer/parents/kids and students. My advice - please you as a road user prevent in causing accident and don't be part of accident. Know @ hand where you are going, direction of your route, the speed you need required for you to be there, the lane to be used and make sure your vehecle is of good condition (ARRIVE ALIVE).

Another case of the coffin on wheels...but no one sees it!

  • nicola.killops - 2012-07-16 12:41

I drove past the scene before they closed the road. It was a gruesome sight that has haunted me all day. The taxi's literally get away with murder.

  • Don.Tandy - 2012-07-16 12:51

Perhaps if we didn't have a metro police force that was so grossly incompetent, drivers would start to realise that they have to take responsibility for their actions.

  • mbambo.shi - 2012-07-16 13:10

I hope these coffins on four wheels are touched on The Second Transition.
