Durban - KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Willies Mchunu on Tuesday lauded positive team work by police and the community of Ulundi which led to the arrest of a suspected serial rapist.

Prompt action by police and community crime fighting structures led to the weekend arrest of the province's most sought after suspected serial rapist, Mchunu said in a statement.

The 31-year-old man was apprehended after members of the community alerted police to his whereabouts. The department’s volunteers, Ulundi CPF and Ulundi police joined forces to track down the suspect.

"We will continue watching the case and we, once again, urge communities to go to court and oppose bail. The arrest of this suspect shows what can be achieved if the police, community safety structures and community work together," Mchunu said.

Department of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison spokesperson Sipho Khumalo said members of the CPF circulated photos of the suspect on social media and in the Zandela and Unit L areas where he was believed to have been operating. He was eventually nabbed in Melmoth last Friday.

"Even up to today, there are more reports of his crimes coming in. The community is much safer with this man behind bars," Khumalo said.

His bail application is expected to be heard on September 15.
