MK vets welcome controversial Leila Khaled visit

2015-01-15 12:30

Johannesburg - The Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association on Thursday welcomed Palestinian activist Leila Khaled's planned visit to South Africa.

"This visit by comrade Leila Khaled would further contribute to serve the purpose to bolster solidarity with the Palestine people's struggle for their birthright," said chairperson Kebby Maphatsoe in a statement.

Khaled was expected to speak at various events next month as a guest of Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) to help in its fundraising efforts.

On Monday, the SA Jewish Board of Deputies said it was "appalled" that the organisation was inviting a "notorious plane hijacker" to the country.

Khaled was the first woman to hijack a passenger plane in 1969.

"By inviting Leila Khaled to this country, BDS-SA has conclusively demonstrated yet again that it has no interest in promoting peace, dialogue, reconciliation or understanding," national director Wendy Kahn said in a statement.

Wrong message

She said the organisation was sending out the wrong message while the world was "confronting the scourge of terrorism".

BDS reportedly said Khaled was in the same league as political figures such as Che Guevara and South Africa's Ruth First and Nelson Mandela. They defended the group's decision saying it was not promoting violence.

Khaled is a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

In 1969 she was part of a team that hijacked a passenger plane flying from Rome to Athens.

After the incident she underwent plastic surgery to conceal her identity and allow her to take part in another plane hijack attempt in 1970.

So my question to all the Jewish persons and organizations out there who so overwhelmingly supported the ANC during the 80's and 90's do you think you made a mistake ?

      Phil Galpin - 2015-01-15 13:52

'Khaled is a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine'. 'Life of Brian' anybody?

      Madhi - 2015-01-15 16:54

Yes she is welcomed, you do not like it, tough love! Why complain against her but roll a red carpet for zionazis and their boyfriends like Blair who do not only lie but kill children with a smile. She is not here to hijack any plane, not that SAA has any worth the effort. The opposition is just pure hatred for palestinians and muslims of which, it surely should make us proud to be hated, it means we are on the right direction. The day a Muslim is cheered on by Zionazis is the day the Muslim should know he has strayed, so go on complain and we will march on with a smile.

      Scouter Four-One - 2015-01-15 19:27

And this ANC government wonders why it has no credibility anymore, worldwide. The West regards SA as just another African begging bowl in the making and the East recognises it as easy pickings for as long as they can keep the corrupt and inept ANC order in power.

      Louis-Wilhelm van Heerden - 2015-01-15 21:34

They have so much in common! Both are too cowardly to take on the security forces directly and loves to harm the most vulnerable of society!

lol i love the comments on news 24 @least 75% of comments made here are whites who hate ANC we pass those stages what ANC does for the country who live to adapt wont find flaws in them many of you are still in old s.a go sandton you will see how close blacks and whites are some even have colourd babies haha so stand up straight accept whats in front and live life no 1 pushed you out of this country if you accept you will be fine im not talking of accepting the crime and corruption accept the fact s.a is run by a black government who might not be the best but they are in charge

the only time the Dalai Lama will be welcomed in SA is when he kisses Beijings b u t t or joins a terrorists organisation

      kalabafazi - 2015-01-15 13:40

We are the hijacking capital of the world. To the anc she is a Wonder Woman. If we had been a nation of peace then the Dalai Lama would have had no issues in getting a visa

  • MG MG - 2015-01-15 12:37

The SA Jewish Board of Deputies should rather do more to speak out about Zionist atrocities in Palestine. Zionism is the source of all evil in Palestine, and Palestinian actions, are a direct reaction to apartheid Israel.

      Abizou Walkeen - 2015-01-15 13:26

MG MG I agree. Google Anas Omar Hajajla. Google checkpoint 300. There are more than 700'000 Israelis living illegally in terms of the Geneva convention. Do some research about what things are really like in Palestine and read Terry Crawford-Brown's "Eye on the Diamonds".

      Abizou Walkeen - 2015-01-15 13:28

Nikki I would hardly consider the bible an authority on anything ha ha ha

      Buzz McBar - 2015-01-15 13:36

@MG and Abizou, if you condemn the actions of Israel, then surely you do the same for the actions of IS, Boko haram, Hezbollah etc as any fair and just human being would do. Now can you please tell me why you aren't condemning their actions in these forums and in the street the way you do against Israel ?

      Anthony De Lucchi - 2015-01-15 13:48

Strangely enough way back in 1462 the Turkish Authorities were in favour of allowing the Jews back to Palastine, because at that time the leading intellectuals of the world were Jewish Scholars! put that in your turban and chew on it!!

      Muhammed Khan - 2015-01-15 14:04

Nobody said that Jews cannot live in Palestine... The problem comes about when the Palestinians land is stolen to accommodate the Zionists. Im sure the Turkish authorities in 1462 weren't stealing land, by kicking out the occupants and then handing that over to the Jews.

      Gerald Nchabeleng - 2015-01-18 18:09

Is this the BDS agenda, Brandywhatever? Is BDS bringing their Boko Haram type stuff to South Africa be inciting race wars? Is this how they plan to pull South Africa into their muslim wars? Today there are reports warning South African military not to get involved in Boko Haram business in Nogeria because it will make us vulnerable to terror attacks. I say NOW is the time for South Africans to recognise this evil that has terrible plans for our home country.

  • Lynn O'Shea Comley-White - 2015-01-15 13:39

It's so sad what is happening in this country and the whole world. Evil personified is welcomed into this country and no one in the government does a thing about it. Sometimes I think I have had enough of this planet. can't wait to leave and go somewhere where there are no arguments, fights, wars, terrorism and hate like there is on Earth. So very sad!

      Lynn O'Shea Comley-White - 2015-01-15 13:41

And then I see such wonderful people all around us and KNOW that there is not only Hate here but all-consuming love .... if only we could see more of it.

  • Blane Blandon - 2015-01-15 13:42

The same league as Mandela , both outright terrorists .

      Phumi Mlokoti - 2015-01-15 13:53

That must really upset you hey Blane, that Mandela died a hero slash icon and that he had world respect, ran this country and practically had everything named after him. That must really grate your teeth. Let the bitterness go.

      Koos Petoors - 2015-01-15 14:24

Hey Phumi, it must really upset you that the same ANC that Mandela belonged to is now failing those who have given the blood for the struggle, while the whitey's are making it rich in other parts of the world. That must really grate your teeth!

      Chris Felton - 2015-01-15 14:46

Hi Blane. If Mandela was a terrorist he would have done things very differently when he was released. I cant stand Zuma and the current ANC, Mandela was very different to these thugs. Humility, compassion, empathy, forgivness, all traits of Nelson Mandela. With your comment I would say you are in the same league as Jacob Zuma.

      Phumi Mlokoti - 2015-01-16 08:01

Koos It must reaaly grate your teeth that you are not one of those "whitey's' who are making it big in other parts of the world. Instead you are stuck here in the ANC led South Africa making daily comments on News24. You are probably one of those 'whitye's' walking around angry at the whole world because the ANC has ruined your life..

  • Terence Wessels - 2015-01-15 13:49

Well, terrorists hang out with other terrorists. Nothing strange here?

  • Phumi Mlokoti - 2015-01-15 14:11

Some of the names commenting on here are the same names that were calling for the release of Eugene De Kock on parole saying 'he has served his time' and that he must go and 'spend time with family' and that people should 'forgive and forget'. This woman commited an act of terror in 69-70. That's over 40 years ago. That's longer that the very little 20 years De Kock has spent in prison. I say Welcome Leila Khaled, I hope you enjoy your stay.

      Terence Wessels - 2015-01-15 14:16

I hope its YOUR car that gets the bomb from her.....

      Phumi Mlokoti - 2015-01-15 14:23

Somehow I don't think it will be. But that is a very hateful comment for your to make, that my car should get bombed. Is that how you solve a difference in opinion?

      Koos Petoors - 2015-01-15 14:28

@Phumi, Frankly nobody cares a crap about Leila. It is the inconsistency in foreign policy that sends a message to the world - Dalai Lama not allowed, yet Leila is. There is already talk about SA being a terrorist haven, and giving her a visa is re-inforcing that picture of SA.

      Shaun Vasquez - 2015-01-15 15:05

And your point is what....... Racist... go read up in the history books of South Africa or google it.. Mandela was also released after comiting acts if terrorism..... He served his time and was released....

  • Koos Petoors - 2015-01-15 14:17

Leila is here to give an overview and historic perspective of the art of hijacking, and to get a refersher course in the latest techniques as demonstrated by some of our esteemed politicians.

      Baine Kriel - 2015-01-16 12:26

Thank you taurik for your mature comment. I agree with you and it is sad that people of all sectors of our society are still being raised or raising there children with a racist mind set.luckily I believe and one can see that it doesn't matter how much hate is being sowed love will eventually come thru. A good example is the free borns that are growing up together in school etc. Regardless of race they are socialising and making plans for a combined future as one nation.

  • Paul Hilzinger - 2015-01-15 17:31

@Sage Wiseman, I agree totally! The people in power practiced terrorism at its worst and probably still do on another level. This country is a cesspool of international terrorists by now and probably even have training camps here! The mere fact that SA has had no terrorist attacks on its soil lately is miraculous or it means it has been making deals with them!

  • Pieternella VandeKaap - 2015-01-15 18:18

The muslims have seen an opportunity! They have seen racial tension in South Africa, and they will USE that tension to forment war. They will call it a racial war, but it will be a religious war of muslim agains non-muslim and have nothing to do with skin colour - even if they say so. Wake up, South Africans. We are in deep, deep trouble. BDS-style Boko Haram is here.
