MP charges metro cops with brutality

Johannesburg - A member of Parliament has brought charges against Johannesburg metro police for allegedly crashing into her car and insulting her, The New Age reported on Monday.

Arts and culture portfolio committee chairperson Thandile Babalwa Sunduza told the newspaper she thought she was being hijacked when metro police officials confronted her in Sandton on Friday.

After telling them she would park her car to avoid blocking traffic, Sunduza reportedly said she "heard a big bang" and realised a metro police 4x4 had crashed into her car. About 10 metro police surrounded it.

"It was traumatic.... The female officers were calling me 'isifebe' (a "whore") and a dog," she was quoted as telling The New Age.

She said she was threatened with arrest for talking on her cellphone while driving, but reportedly claimed both her cellphones were in the car boot.

Sunduza had brought charges of intimidation and malicious damage to property against the metro police officials.

Police spokesperson Captain Kym Cloete told the newspaper no arrests had yet been made, and Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said a separate, internal investigation had been launched.

"If [the metro police] are in the wrong, action will be taken against them," she said.

  • warren-rodel - 2013-04-22 10:46

Why cant you government officials start hiring a proper police force? Oh yes, its because you cannot pay their salaries accordingly because you need to pay yours extravagant salaries and bonuses first.

      Regte Boer - 2013-04-22 11:06

They have to employ all the ex-MK scum.

Welcome to the real world lady! Now you know what its like to be a normal citizen, hope this opens your eyes which I doubt, none of you parlimentarians can see beyond the gravy!

The police needs to be retrained in modern, proper police work and conduct. The forces of today are still working according to the apartheid police procedures where 75% of people were not thought to be proper citizens and you could do as you pleased with them. Update police and train them in how to work with the public!

      DanielDennett - 2013-04-22 11:20

Training is not the only problem, upbringing should teach you not to call a woman a whore.

      Tuner - 2013-04-22 11:52

Nigel, you need to understand moron Gordon is only doing what his president zuma told to do: blame it all on apartheid, silly sheep.

      GordonTheFreeman - 2013-04-22 13:56

      Actually not tumor, remember Marikana?

      sxp - 2013-04-22 14:30

They simply need to be forced back under common law, ehre each one cannot hide behind the organization but have to stand in person when he is charged. That and standing under their oath as peace officers will sort them out.

I was pulled over in a routine Metro roadblock. The cops was extremely aggressive and goaded me to get a reaction. He got the opposite, the more aggressive he was, the friendlier I was. In the end he just told me to go. I share this as this has worked for me more than once. Try it. But, I will also state that in the more than 3 dozen routine roadblocks I have been through on the last two years odd, for the majority, the Metro cops were friendly and professional. It is time the good ones sort out the bad one internally.

That is why if a metro officer tries to pull me over, especially late at night or in quiet area I refuse to slow down, if he doesn't get out of my way I'll drive over him. They are criminals and thugs and can't be trusted.

  • Alpheus Nethononda - 2013-04-22 11:34

    Send them to CAR!

  • Erna - 2013-04-22 11:43

  • Ruan Smit - 2013-04-22 11:45

IQ tests should be done before applying for a position in our police force.

      sxp - 2013-04-22 14:31

He he, that will be an eye opener.

  • Wendy Nezar Schmidt - 2013-04-22 11:48

I wonder if the metro cops know what their real job is .. maybe someone should train them .. they behave like criminals.

  • Wreford White - 2013-04-22 11:49

Would love to send these THUG COPS to CAR instead of our army and see how these " peace officers" handle retaliation instead of weak minded citizens
