Mabopane train stopped by protest

2014-01-15 22:31

Pretoria - Train services to Mabopane north of Pretoria were interrupted on Wednesday due to a service delivery protest, Metrorail said.

"Community members from an informal settlement between Akasia and Kopanong, north of Pretoria, have blocked Metrorail railway lines to Mabopane with rocks, and burning tyres, and damaged Metrorail signalling equipment such as cables, signals and signal boxes," said spokesperson Tony Games.

"This community is protesting against service delivery-related issues. This unfortunate behaviour has severely affected trains going to Mabopane. Trains are now turning around Akasiaboom Station."

The Mabopane line had been closed temporarily and rendered unsafe for running trains.

"Our duty as Metrorail is to protect our employees, commuters and assets. We are appealing to the community not to endanger the lives of innocent commuters going home by interrupting the normal train service."

Games said police had been called to the scene and a Metrorail technical team was deployed to the area to remove the stones, burning tyres and rubble from the lines.

"The technical team will also assess the damages on the line with a view to repair the damages."

He appealed to commuters to make alternative transport arrangements where possible.

      Leijn Tissink - 2014-01-16 04:24

@ Nic Agree ... However it's the only way that these people affected by their incomptent and corrupt local coucil can get attention to their plight. The question is whether they learn from their experience and vote into power a different party at election time to resolve their issues.

  • Msindisi Dube - 2014-01-15 23:09

lake of thinking, selfishnes &polluted minds are the reason 4 this evil act,how is service delivery linked to trains or commuters for that matter...people need to grow up if police officers use maximum force media turn 2 have a field dai

      Jannie Beirowski - 2014-01-16 04:37

Msindisi, I can understand them being fed-up with the non-service delivery. I also agree with your statement of "lack of thinking". They do not think about the fact that they elected these people from 1994 till today. They did have 3 or 4 elections where they could have gotten rid of these people, but time and time again the elected them. They did not have the services in 1994 and now they still do not have it. I wish they would realise that they create their problem themselves. They do not realise that if you do the same thing over and over again, how can you expect a different result?

Their cry is the Redevelopment distribution programme of the houses that ANC councillors sold to the Foreigners. These officials can give you a key to your RDP but when you get there you find that it is a mansion and you are refused access, the one who owns your RDP bought it to these corrupt officials.so what ANC officials are doing they gonna cost ANC votes.Zuma bought a plane but he fail to meet the people, his minister are friendly to their offices but not with the people!so who are they leading if they fail to visit communities?Trouble straight!

      Chris Faurie - 2014-01-16 09:02

It is no use to request their attendance. They are only there to enrich themselves and their family.

Its the same people year after year that are protesting for this and protesting for that.....are they really that dumb that come elections they vote for the same party again. What is wrong with peoples mentality, that they protest yet when the ANC come to the area with Kentucky Chicken they dance and sing and are so happy to sell their vote. Goodness every body was given a BRAIN even the most stupidist person can surely think for himself......come man either stop protesting or CHANGE YOUR VOTE...PEOPLE CANNOT HAVE IT TWO WAYS.

      Chris Faurie - 2014-01-16 09:04

  • Dirk Engelbrecht - 2014-01-16 07:08

To damage things is not protesting... Its called vandalism and sabotage... You think you can always fix thing by damaging, breaking or burning it... Remember it will now take longer to fix everything...

      Chris Faurie - 2014-01-16 09:06

It is costly as well. This money could be put to better use. I mean, Nkandla is not fully completed yet, there must be something that can be improved?

  • Nzama Ngobeni - 2014-01-16 07:18

The mayor is the one to solve this cause we are tired of police killing our brothers and sisters for service delivery.it is a known fact that councillors and officials steal from the poor but nothing is being done.they are given Budget but ends in their accounts than improving services delivery! As for the national leadership what are they doing for the people than to fight for their personal battles?

  • Sandile Mahlazi - 2014-01-16 07:29

Cant people just protest without damaging other peoples' properties? This nonsense really has to stop!

      Brad Smith - 2014-01-16 07:43

it is insanity and I fully agree with what you said. Glad there are some rational people like you out there still.

      Chris Faurie - 2014-01-16 09:08

Michael Rose: They do have an alternative, it is called voting.
