Mbombela - Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza plans to sue former premier Mathews Phosa for R10m for alleging he was an apartheid spy, according to a report.

Beeld reported on Friday that Mabuza had requested that President Jacob Zuma appoint a commission of inquiry, and ask the minister of state security to investigate the allegations.

This comes after a "top secret" report detailing Mabuza's alleged spying on the ANC between 1985 and 1993 was apparently e-mailed to high-ranking ANC officials.

The report alleges that Mabuza, along with former Vlakplaas commander Eugene de Kock and security policeman Butana Nofomela, spied on top ANC officials such as Phosa, President Jacob Zuma, Albertina Sisulu and Angie Motshekga

According to Beeld, Mabuza has strongly denied the accusations, saying he would never have been an apartheid spy and that the report was politically motivated.

Lowvelder reported that Mabuza's spokesperson declined to comment on the report, saying that a judicial process will be followed.

In September, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela revealed she had served papers on Mabuza after Mpumalanga MEC Norah Mahlangu-Mabena claimed Madonsela was an agent.

Mabuza and his MECs have recently criticised by the DA in the province for spending R32m on buying 24 luxury vehicles in the last five years. Mabuza also spent R3.6m on hiring vehicles.
