Johannesburg - South Africa's greatest heritage is its Constitution, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said on Wednesday.

"South Africans' national heritage transcend[s] artefacts, historical knowledge, traditional clothes, music, language, the environment, and other beautiful legacies from our past," said a statement issued by her office.

"The country's greatest heritage [is]...its Constitution."

Madonsela said that the Constitution served as a "roadmap" for the South Africa people for which people yearned.

She said that when constitutional rights were violated; "there must be avenues for vindicating those rights".

Madonsela also criticised the idea that because she was not a judge, the investigations conducted by her office could only result in recommendations that were not binding.

"We all know that you need not be a judge to have power to make binding decisions," she said.

"[The Public Protector] is one of the levers of constitutional democracy."

Heritage Day is a public holiday in South Africa where people are encouraged to celebrate the many cultures in the country and their heritage.
