Madonsela: Police lease attempt improper

2011-07-14 15:14

Pretoria - The police's attempts to lease a building in Durban from property tycoon Roux Shabangu amounted to maladministration, the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said on Thursday.

The failure of police chief General Bheki Cele to ensure that the correct tender procedures were followed with respect to the Transnet Building amounted to maladministration, Madonsela told reporters in Pretoria.

She said the conduct of public works officials and senior police officials was improper and unlawful.
The Durban lease would have been worth R1.16bn over 10 years.

Madonsela said the market value of the building meant it should have been leased at R40 a square metre and not the R125 per square metre ultimately agreed on.

Brave Lady. Hats off to you!

      Currie_Mafia - 2011-07-14 15:27

Good job...but what will come of this......I'm not holding my breath..

      Gandalf - 2011-07-14 15:34

As Currie says... Nothing ever comes of these investigations, regrettably.

      Rover_ZA - 2011-07-14 15:34

She is doing the office of Public Protector proud!

      FaxM8 Fax - 2011-07-14 15:48

She will be fired or killed by the anc and their corrupt

      ratex - 2011-07-14 16:02

The problem is this, even with her having the best intentions in the world, she is in conflict with the party and they will find a way to get rid of her. Very sad, but very true. Everytime somebody gets too close to the rotting core, the cANCer find a way to hide the truth. But, you go girl, you good thing you. I wish that we had more of you.

      alicia - 2011-07-14 16:27

She is my Hero. God Bless her. Now, eventually, I hope that Bheki Cele gets whats been coming his way for a very long time. When I saw him looking at her, my blood ran cold. He reminds me so much of Lang Hendrik van den Berg, or Snake Eyes as he was generaly referred to.

      Dougalan - 2011-07-14 16:46

Excellent job, Madonsela. You are very brave and deserve the support of every right-thinking South African. Cele needs to be kicked out NOW. What he is doing is robbing the poor with his crooked deals with Roux Shabangu. No person of any moral character can defend him; he is acting like the Mafia. Get rid of him!

      Texxx - 2011-07-14 16:55

      Madonsela for president!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ChrisG - 2011-07-14 15:28

Sorry Bheki and friends, you'll have to find another way to rob us taxpayers blind to live like rock stars.

  • willieman - 2011-07-14 15:29

For once Mr.Zuma show leadership,Cele and Mahlangu should be fired tough luck for party politics. The RULE OF LAW SHOULD BE THE ORDER OF THE DAY

  • John - 2011-07-14 15:31

It appears the only politician with balls is a woman.

      Comrade Mike - 2011-07-14 16:15

      Best comment all day.

  • valleyman - 2011-07-14 15:31

Well done Ms. Madonsela. Long may you last.

  • BigD - 2011-07-14 15:33

wonderful news. Now when is Cele resigning and the others also kicked out.

  • Biko Lives - 2011-07-14 15:33

Time and time again the Police Commissioner has said that he signed the "needs assassment" something that falls within his mandate and not a lease agreement! Why is the PP acting like a judge of the court and passing verdict without being tested by our laws is still mind boggling? The office of the PP has proven that it is not capacitated enough to deal with complex issues and has forgort its mandate! Another problem is having an institution that is accountable to itself just like the Scorpion! We all know the end result that it is not imune to manipulation by those who seek to achieve narrow political agendas! I still say that the office of the PP must have an independent body that it accounts to and also to monitor its work.

      willieman - 2011-07-14 15:40

Are you a friend to Roux, just checking

      McFreak - 2011-07-14 15:47

You have a banana republic mentality! The public protector is our protector, or at least for those of us who understand the rule of constitutional process. people of your ilk will drive this whole country into the ground and then sit an scratch your silly foreheads wondering what happened!

      FaxM8 Fax - 2011-07-14 15:50

      DeonL - 2011-07-14 16:17

She probaly saved the country R773 million rands. So this is bad? You can build a few RDP homes from this.

      Met - 2011-07-14 16:25

Are you the "letting agent" ?

      alicia - 2011-07-14 16:31

The Police Commissioner is a liar and most untrustworthy. Why do you and so many deny the absolute truth? We can not go ahead with all this muck clinging to us.

      Jeff Toms - 2011-07-15 06:29

ITS CALLED ACCOUNTABILITY BIKO !! which it seems very few of the anc lunatic leaders understand, they earn and nick a fortune then say noooo It wasnt my fault or I was framed, or sorry I fell asleep in parlament, or I didnt understand what I was signing, do you get the picture now !!

      Psychotron - 2011-07-15 19:03

Go back to Timeslive. I have seen your comments. You just can't handle the fact your beloved ANC is corrupt to the core so you make up stories. The ANC way.

  • hooottt01 - 2011-07-14 15:35

i agree with you mad man,she is getting something!

      Psychotron - 2011-07-15 19:04

Yes she is getting the job done by rooting out corruption in the ANC.

  • Ross - 2011-07-14 15:38

  • Fazil - 2011-07-14 15:40

Who is laughing all the way to the Bank?

  • Ederik - 2011-07-14 15:42

So who gets the extra R85 / meter?

  • Cecil - 2011-07-14 15:42

Wish we had more honest, gutsy people like lady Madonsela,in the government.

  • kwbateman - 2011-07-14 15:47

Well done! If each South African take this approach to the rule of law in this country and holds people accountable we will make this country the place to be! and be proud of!

  • Sisie - 2011-07-14 15:48

  • Other Justin - 2011-07-14 15:58

Surprise, surprise, mickey mouse in disguise! Nothing new, just the same old corruption, Choo Choooooooooo, and the gravy train rumbles on......

  • OldSA - 2011-07-14 16:04

I take my words back "If you don't tell, we won't tell" This lady has "Balls"

  • Andre - 2011-07-14 16:08

How many ANC caders are left. Is there still enough millions to reward them.

  • Bok Fan - 2011-07-14 16:09

Apart from its hatred of whites I am now convinced that the anc also hates africans. They assume everyone with a black skin is as corrupt and conniving as the worst of them. Apparently this misconception is at the root of their most glaringly obscene criminal behaviour.

  • DeonL - 2011-07-14 16:14

Well done, I hope Cele gets the boot now.

  • jjacgilbert - 2011-07-14 16:17

    Give this lady a Bells

  • GT - 2011-07-14 16:20

HANDCUFFS PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Nothing will changed until the thieving scum running depts. are locked up. What incentive is there for the lower ranks when they just feed off the crumbs left by the bosses.

  • Bill - 2011-07-14 16:22

Well...looks like we will get our first Female President after all! Hats off to Madonsela's bravery in the face of adversity...The public must support her 100% in every way, this is a small chance to make some difference in this corrupt, bug infested government, called the ANC...!

  • Motho - 2011-07-14 16:30

Please South Africans, let's not racialise the thing but make constructive criticisms. The Public Protector found that there was maladiministration in the lease; therefore, let appropiate state agencies take further steps.

  • Texxx - 2011-07-14 16:38

    Madonsela for president!!!!!!

  • TE-A - 2011-07-14 16:50

Shes got gut, but whats gona come out of it its still to be seen. No one takes her serious

      Bill - 2011-07-14 17:08

If they don't, then we must get off our apathetic backsides and make them take her seriously...!

  • braamc - 2011-07-14 21:25

Modonsela for president, wonder what other fat bitch minister and then the "General" got to say for themselves. All a conspiracy, eish

  • Omungwalume - 2011-07-15 08:51

What a brave lady!! However I know some of these role players and I will be very surprised if the report against Cele is not forgotten and shelved!

  • Psychotron - 2011-07-15 19:05

You know whats really sad? The fact that the ANC trolls on this forum actually want corruption to continue. Are you guys hiding something?
