Parliament - DA Parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane on Thursday condemned xenophobic attacks in Durban and other parts of the country.

Speaking in Parliament during a special question session, he said violence could never be tolerated.

"Our humanity is slipping away from us and we cannot allow this," he said.

He understood the frustration of young people who did not have jobs, especially since the unemployment rate stood at 36.1%.

"[But] we cannot allow people to brutalise others. Foreign business owners are not the enemy," he said.

The real enemy was corruption and a culture where dialogue was the last resort.

"We must not turn xenophobia into political football".
