Durban - There were major disruptions in the traffic in Durban on Friday morning after an accident involving a minibus taxi, four vehicles and an SUV on the M13.

Motorists travelling towards Pietermaritzburg were also affected due to ongoing road works at Spaghetti Junction and the Pavilion.

ER24’s Chitra Bodasing said traffic had to be diverted after the collision on the M13 westbound between Essex Terrace and Rockdale in Westville.

When paramedics and other services arrived at the scene they found one car on its roof on a road barrier and patients sitting on the side of the road.

“Patients were assessed. One patient from the overturned vehicle sustained moderate injuries and 14 other people sustained minor injuries,” said Bodasing.

She said patients were treated and transported to hospital for further medical care.

The exact cause of the collision is unknown. Authorities were on scene for further investigations.

“The M13 towards Pinetown was heavily backed up because the vehicle was still on the road this morning and authorities were trying to get it off the road,” said Bodasing.

East Coast Radio Traffic’s Nondumiso Zakwe said there was a broken down vehicle on the N3 towards Pietermaritzburg in the early hours of Friday morning.

“What may be causing the major traffic could be the left hand lane on the Spaghetti Junction and the Pavilion. The lane has been closed due to continuous road construction.”

KZN police and eThekwini Metro police could not provide details about the accident.
