Cape Town - The majority of the fire which has been raging in the Jonkershoek area near Stellenbosch has been contained, a Cape Nature spokesperson said on Friday.

The fire, which has crept closer to residential areas in Stellenbosch and Helderberg, but is still contained in the Jonkershoek Valley, flared up in the Banhoek Valley area on Thursday night.

Firefighters fought hard to contain the flare-up overnight, and the majority of the fire has now been contained, Cape Nature’s Justin Lawrence told News24.

Firefighters from CapeNature, Cape Winelands District Municipality, Cape Pine, Working on Fire, Stellenbosch Municipality, City of Cape Town and Drakenstein fire departments and the Volunteer Wildfire Services will continue to monitor the blaze for the rest of the day.

Over 4 000 hectares of alien vegetation and fynbos have been destroyed so far as the blaze enters its fifth day.

The cause of the fire is being investigated and ecological damage is being assessed.

“The incident command centre wishes to thank the public for their support and supplies donated to the firefighters,” Lawrence added.
