Polokwane – A high school near Malamulele caught fire on Wednesday morning, destroying exam papers and disrupting the mid-year exams, Limpopo police said.

All mid-year exam scripts were lost in the fire that began in the Humula High School's administration block around 05:00, Colonel Ronel Otto said.

The administration block of the school, in Mukhomi village, had five offices and three storerooms and contained five laptops, a computer, and sports kit donated by the Lotto fund, all worth about R180 000.

Local residents on their way to work noticed the fire and called authorities. The school had no security and the cause of the fire was not yet known.

Pupils stood by the fence watching firefighters try to contain the flames.

Provincial education department spokesperson Naledzani Rasila said they would ask police if pupils could be allowed to complete their exams on Wednesday.

Earlier this year, fires broke out at another two schools in the area. It was not clear if arson was involved.
