Madonsela, Malema share newsmaker spoils

Johannesburg - The National Press Club on Sunday named Public Protector Thuli Madonsela and ANC Youth League president Julius Malema as their joint newsmaker of the year.

Club chairperson Yusuf Abramjee said the two, more often than not, dominated the media environment in 2011.

“In 2011 Madonsela was the strongest voice for good governance that rights administrative wrongs," he said in a statement.

Madonsela's finding on the controversial leasing of buildings for the police service resulted in President Jacob Zuma firing two ministers and suspending Bheki Cele, the national police commissioner.

“The impact of her work is priceless, seen in the context of South Africa - both in the private and public sector - where corruption and maladministration is rife. Her strong leadership, accompanied by decisive actions, assist greatly in leading the country to a corrupt-free society,” said Abramjee.

'Like him or loathe him'

And "like him or loathe him" Malema's "antics, controversial statements and appearances" dominated the local agenda throughout the year.

"Never before has a nation been so gripped, divided or united by news made by one individual" said Abramjee.

Malema has made headlines locally and internationally - on issues of nationalisation and regime change in Botswana.

Told by the press club of the awards, Abramjee said, Youth League spokesperson Floyd Shivambu told the club: "We are not participating in any of these things. You can go ahead and no leader of the ANC Youth League will be involved and no message will be sent. Please stop any form of communication with the ANC Youth League."

Madonsela said the decision came as a surprise.

"I thank the National Press Club for giving recognition to the team that I lead. It ensures that the people of South Africa get justice when they have been unfairly treated by government and also helps government to improve its service delivery and governance,” she said, according to Abramjee.

Previous years have seen President Jacob Zuma, Charlize Theron, Zachie Achmat and the Treatment Action Campaign, and Eskom as newsmakers of the year.

The 2010 honours went to FIFA president Sepp Blatter and sports administrator Danny Jordaan.

The Good and the Bad. All it needs is Zuma, to make the Ugly.

      John - 2012-01-22 17:14

Any bozo can clown around and say ugly things. But it takes real COURAGE to do the right thing for the PEOPLE of South Africa, in the face of the Association of National Criminals, Abortion Murder Genocide, who have been destroying South Africa since 1957. From me, just another people, Thank you, Thuli Madonsela! You are an inspiration to me!

      Thuthukile Madlabane - 2012-01-22 17:18

i think Zuma is already the ugly, it goes without saying.

Malema, Jesus loves you, Malema, Your mother loves you, Malema, Your father loves, Repent, Manpara, repent, Repent, Ignorant, repent, Repent, Negligent, repent, Repent, Liar, repent, Repent, Thief, repent, Repent, Baby Killer, repent, Repent, Genocider, repent! Okai, stop the bus, how can you say all that? Lets have a look: Malema is Ignorant that the Failed Communist Countries like the USSR, China, Vietnam, Cuba, etc, employed Central Control Economies ( CCE ), with full and total nationalisation. Negligent - as the head of an organization, it is his duty to be fully informed of the economic history of total disasters of CCE. He does not know that Gorbachov announced reforms away from nationalization – in the early 1980’s! He is a Liar, because these are not his ideas, these ideas have been around for over 100 years. Thief, he has stolen the PEOPLES money – that is how bribery and corruption works. Baby Killer, as a member of the ANC – Abortion Murder Genocide, is guilty of the Genocide of 800 000 black babies in government hospitals! Genocider, as a member of the ANC – Abortion Murder Genocide, is guilty of the Genocide of 5 Million Aids sufferers which were refused medication. Repent, Manpara, Repent!

One for all the right reasons, and she gets panned by the ANC and the ANCYL. One for all the wrong reasons, and he gets feted by thousands of retards. Sometimes I wonder if democracy did not arrive a few centuries too early in SA.

      John - 2012-01-22 17:24

In his book the Communistisation of the ANC, Gerard Luddi remembers that Smuts invited the Rhodesians to join the RSA. Given the close call of the 1948 elections, when the Nats, with an alliance come to power, Ludi wonders that if Smuts would have remained in power, there might have been an early settlement with the ANC, and other black organizations and tribal leaders, which would have prevented the ANC being taken over by Mandela, Sisulu, etc, and would have kept these communist evil doers at bay. Luddi was the guy which infiltrated the Communist Party.

One is a giant, the other a midget. No prizes for guessing which is which.

one for many reasons that shouldn't be; the other for many reasons that can't be; one is building the nation for the good of all; the other seeks to destroy in the name of self enrichment; One stands in the face of corruption to destroy it; the other merely seeks to gain from it. Malema doesn't deserve to have his name in the media highlights, no matter how 'popular' he has been; Madonsela deserves the support of all South Africans

Thuli became my hero when Tarzan passed away, but sadly it seems she has had some brakes put onto her by the ANC. We don't hear much of her lately, although there is increased corruption. She was also supposed to investigate the cabinet maker's finacial position, and the reason for not doing so ( not enough resources ) did not wash with me. Looks like I must now find myself a new hero.
