Malema gets bail

2012-09-26 11:10

Polokwane - Expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema was granted bail of R10 000 by the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Malema was officially charged with money laundering, for allegedly "receiving proceeds from unlawful activities".

The affidavit he made in support of his application for bail was not read out in court. The case was postponed to 30 November.

Malema appeared with his business partner and co-accused Selbie Manthatha.

An affidavit by Manthatha was read to the court by his counsel. It detailed his family life, his business and his assets.

Before Malema's affidavit could be read, the court adjourned for five minutes.

When the case reconvened, bail was immediately granted to both of them.

Supporters clung to the gates outside the court waiting for feedback on the decision about Malema's bail.

Hearing that he had been granted bail, they broke into song and dance.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said no incidents of violence were reported.

"The crowd is very orderly and I hope it will remain smooth like this throughout the day."

The crowd outside had swelled to nearly 1 000 people in anticipation of an address by Malema.

      rbphiri - 2012-09-26 11:27

But his associates were granted R40 000 bail, his bail should've been set at the same amount. The anc in Limpopo have come out to say they are in full support of this butthole, this is good, since the remifications will lead to further factions in the party.

      alan.gernet - 2012-09-26 11:37

what a joke - He gets R10G bail, and the co-accused get R40G. Kinda tells ya who is going to take the fall....

So less than his counterparts when he was the main head? How the hell and what about the millions? He is allowed to get away with that? So you can steal 4 odd million and only pay R10 000 in return, maybe I should invest in something like that.

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-09-26 11:18

He probably claimed unemployment so he got off lightly.

      Rabbler.Rouser - 2012-09-26 11:34

Perhaps the NPA is being smart here. Get a conviction for money laundering. Then if his partners in crime are found guilty they have a much better case against Malema for fraud and corruption. There is no reason why they cannot institute new charges later that have a much better chance of securing a conviction against him.

  • charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-09-26 11:18

Why does he only pay R 10 000 ??? Seems this is favouritism. He should have been thrown straight into jail with no bail. Malema is GUILTY !!!

As a supporter of Malema you should also suffer whatever fate he suffers. He is against any progress for South Africa and would rather watch it burn to the ground so that he can make some money on the side!

He's ANC in Limpopo is rife with scandalous behaviour, impacting children who is in school. He is speaking of nationalising the mines, where does it say that you sebenza will get anything? This guy only enrich himself, yet you cheer for him like he is your Hero. I am clearly missing something.

      morama.sebata - 2012-09-26 12:12

@ghost,surely it's daytime now all ghost are fast asleep and what the hell are you doing here?

  • tammy.laumann - 2012-09-26 11:40

My word people! I really, really do not support this fool or the nonsense he speaks but come one. He is NOT worth millions because the millions he had he got by MONEY LAUNDERING, which he is being charged with. Therefore, he has no money so R10 000 is not 'nothing'. Secondly, he is not being charged with murder or another violent crime, he has been charged with a white collar crime. Of course he is going to get bail! Why would the court throw anyone (not just Malema) into jail with no bail for a white collar crime? Be realistic. We all hate this dude and want him to go to jail but don't let this hatred cloud your logic of the situation.

      whites.mustunite - 2012-09-26 11:42

Ever heard the term "flight risk"?

      tammy.laumann - 2012-09-26 11:50

Ever considered that the entire world knows who he is? Besides, that would be pretty ideal if he just vanished off of the face of the earth. In jail he would still have the uneducated supporters who 'know Malema is innocent' and would still have a voice to rally up his supporters. So yes, I hope he follows through on being a 'flight risk'.

      whites.mustunite - 2012-09-26 11:57

Well he would probably join his boyfriend Bob in Zimbabwe. He has huge support there, and unlike us, Zim has a functioning military. Do some research on the many current and present wars in Africa and see how many of them began. Also please dont assume that the whole world knows who he is. The rest of the world doesnt give a rats ass about Africa.

      morama.sebata - 2012-09-26 12:14

  • Diyaksha Chetty - 2012-09-26 11:42

He has no right to be associated with the ANCYC any more. 2) How did this idiot get the money he is being accused of laundering? "illegal activities"?? He was a civil servant with a salary and no prior wealth or recently dead rich relative. 1+1=2 ie he has far more money than he possible could have accrued by legal means. This has been obvious for years. 3) Zombie apocalypse is here already :( The first wave of brain dead zombies can already been seen running around behind JuJu, ooo`ing and awww`ing on every word.

Unfortunately politics in SA is now not what you know but who you know. In the end nothing of consequence will happen to Malema. It appears that Zuma will be out when the ANC elect their presidential candidate later this year and it will open the door for Malema's re-instatement into the ANC and he will then again officially be in charge of the ANCYL. He knows it and knows he is largely untouchable. That is African politics - the buddy system. He will then proceed on his nationisation crusade and eventully drag South Africa and ALL its citizens to the level of Zimbabwe and another 'breadbasket' (ie South Africa) will become just another Africa basket case asking for handouts.

      jonivdw - 2012-09-26 13:49

And you ignore the fact that he is self-serving and really only for himself.... If he was for liberating the people he wouldn't be stealing from these very people? His tax conviction was for R16 mil.... Do you know how many jobs could've been created, SMME companies developed, house built and services provided for the people with just those funds.... Your idea of liberty and mine seem very different... You sound like you want to be his slave and follow blindly... My idea is an equal high quality education system for all, once we have that playing field leveled true economic freedom for all is in our grasp! We need business enablers to assist SMME business access the market place, create & develop skills and jobs.... Unfortunately Julius thinks demanding mines & property is the route to economic freedom.... It's not, you will still need highly skilled, qualified and business minded people with years and years of experience to run those mines otherwise they'll be useless and the miners worse off.... Julius is not highly skilled or business minded and hence not able to appreciate the consequences of such action.... We need to fight for an equal education in South Africa.... It's not happening! The kids in the township and rural areas are still getting screwed! They don't have access to libraries, science labs, text books or teachers who think teaching is a calling and not just a job... Education is true freedom.......

African children must learn their lesson on the debacle around Julius Malema, his rise to poltics & the charges brought against him,i personal think that there are lesson to be learnt:1st he never based his decision on what is termed intergrity during 2007 Polokwane's support of President Zuma. :Most people during 2007 seems to have crucified Pres Mbeki without facts :The NPA by dropping the charges based on irregularities of individual not on the merits of the law & wether or not the accuse (Pres Zuma)was guilty or not there for having denied the whole republic to the right to law & justice. I forsee the same with Malema's case since there so much of an inteference from the government the public will be denied once more of knowing the truth.
