Malema was released on R5 000 bail after being arrested for doing 215km/h in a 120km/h zone in the Vaal while Hofmeyr was released on R500 bail for doing 175km/h in a 120km/h.

At about 00:30, Malema tweeted:

Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo said late Thursday evening that Malema had still been in police custody around 23:00.

Malema was detained around 19:25 and was taken to the Barrage police station, but was transferred to the Vanderbijlpark police station.

There were two women and another man in the charcoal BMW 530d, she said.

Hofmeyr said in a statement on his Facebook page that his actions were irresponsible and dangerous.
