Malema spent R300k on designer clothes

2012-12-09 14:36

Johannesburg - Expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema allegedly used the Ratanang Family Trust for his own benefit, the Sunday Independent has reported.

Almost R6m of the money deposited into the Ratanang Family Trust bank account was paid out, and Malema was apparently the sole signatory, according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers forensic audit report.

According to the newspaper, the report found that "R5.7m of the money deposited into the Ratanang Family Trust bank account was paid out by way of 166 cheques".

The report was authored by auditor Trevor White, for the National Treasury, and had been shared with the Anti-Corruption Task Team, which includes the Hawks, the Asset Forfeiture Unit, the Special Investigating Unit, and the National Prosecuting Authority.

White's opinion was that the Ratanang Family Trust was set up by Malema as a conduit to channel money, which was received "in many instances" from contractors doing work for the Limpopo government.

The object was to disguise or conceal the source of the funds.

Malema appeared to have used the funds for his own benefit, spending nearly R380 000 on designer clothes, and transferring over R200 000 to his personal account.

The trust was established to benefit his son, the newspaper reported.

@ Mzisi - Let it go if I didn't vote for him? Really? This man could become the future president of this country and you want me to let it go? Not in this lifetime, Bru. You might not mind crooks running this country and influencing our youth, but I sure do.

      John - 2012-12-09 15:40

Msizi - the ones that vote for him affect everyone . That's the relevance

Ratanang trust is a fraudulently allocated credit that malema will have to return soon and with a penalty attached of course.

      PrettyUsefulArt - 2012-12-09 17:49

@ Kagiso - the difference is that they spend their OWN money. Not money STOLEN from the people.

Nothing will happen to malema. Of all the thieving, lying, incompetent cretins in government, and by this I most definitely include Zuma, the biggest liar and thief of them all - there have been precious few prosecutions and there will be very few In the future. The shaik and Selebi sagas told us exactly what the ANC thinks of the law, and we can all starve for all they care. By "we can all ...." I do man all of us. They don't care about colour or creed. They just don't care as long as they get their sticky fingers into our money with no consequences and the assurance of further terms in office.

Great news, that the skeletons are falling out. A win for Zuma and these investigations will surely put an end to Malema once and for all, and once he has been sorted out by the law, then they can go after Zuma. Its like assisting a cobra to kill a rattlesnake, both are snakes, but just one less snake to deal with going forward. (My sincerest apologies to all snake lovers in general and to all snakes in particular, didnt mean to insult anyone)

      David - 2012-12-09 15:47

Moron. The point is that the money was obtained illegally. There is now way that, through his salary, he could afford to buy clothes to the value of 300K. What this evidence proves is that he was accepting money from companies, who just happened to have tenders from the Limpopo government, and funnelling it through this trust fund in an attempt to hide it from the authorities. Unfortunately for him, his little scheme failed. I just wonder how many other corrupt government officials are doing the same thing.
