Cape Town - Four employees of a Cape Town restaurant who were injured when a can of cooking spray oil exploded on Saturday are to be examined by a plastic surgeon, it was reported on Monday.

The Cape Times reported that the four Spur employees suffered burn wounds but were discharged from hospital on Saturday. A fifth employee, who suffered first-and second-degree burns on both her arms and face is still being treated at Constantiaberg Medi-Clinic. She is presently sedated but said to be in a stable condition.

The five employees were in the kitchen at the Spur restaurant in the Blue Route Mall in Cape Town's southern suburbs at about 10:00 on Saturday when a can of Spray and Cook which was left near the restaurant's oven exploded, Sapa reported over the weekend.

CCTV footage of the kitchen showed the canister was responsible for the explosion.

A number of emergency vehicles and police officers rushed to the scene, and the mall was evacuated. Trauma counselling was provided for about 50 people at the scene, the newspaper reported.

The explosion mostly caused damage to the kitchen ceiling and cooking area. This was repaired and the restaurant is operating normally.
