Man, 91, attacked on Bloem smallholding

2012-10-29 08:30

Bloemfontein - A 91-year-old man described how robbers attacked and assaulted him on his Bloemfontein smallholding.

“You read about it and get desensitised, until it happens to you,” David Mynhardt, 91, told Volksblad.

“My body hurts but I can still walk. It could’ve been so much worse.”

The attack happened on Friday night at about 23:00 when three men with knives attacked Mynhardt and asked for money and weapons.

His hands and feet were with tied with cables and the house was ransacked.

“They got a fright when they saw my daughter’s car’s headlights and ran off.”

A laptop and cellphones were missing.

His daughter saw something was not right and called the police. Mynhardt was found tied up on his bed.

“I really am grateful. Things could easily have been very different.”

So glad he was not killed. These bastards should be ashamed of themselves - praying on helpless old people.

Nothing but filthy cowards! Hope they dont make it the next time they run over the N1.

They have no shame about ANYTHING. The only shame attached to them is the fact that they were ever born - what a wonderful world it would be without people like this and the only way to get rid of them is DEATH PENALTY! DEATH PENALTY! DEATH PENALTY! Viva DEATH PENALTY!

We will continue to suffer such devastating consequences to irresponsible leaders who propagate violence through their statements and songs.

Those smallholdings outside Bloemfontein is a haven and paradise for criminals.

      JHLR73 - 2012-10-29 09:05

South Africa in general is a paradise for vile cowardly criminal murderers who pray on the elderly and get away with it most of the time..

@ZION. Well our prez did spew: Implementation of this land reform proposal would include five steps. It would include identifying land readily available from land already in the market; land where the farmer was under severe financial pressure; land held by an absentee landlord willing to exit; "and land in a deceased estate." http://mg.co.za/article/2012-10-23-zuma-proposes-five-step-land-reform-plan This makes me think ....

Were the three walking upright or on all fours? Evolution is 100% true. The missing link is alive and well living in Africa.

It's not so stupid, ratsaka. Just look at the statistics of race on race crimes in SA. It's actually quite accurate.

  • ken.koen - 2012-10-29 09:05

These ongoing and escalating Horrible rapes and murders of predominantly old white people is frightening, and I can't help thinking there's a racist political agenda. Added to this is the sinister persistance of lenience by the courts when dealing with horrendous crimes, that is really frightening.

      sakhile.gamede - 2012-10-29 10:02

money is money, these people who rob,rob u 2 as black people...this is not abt race..."white people your'l need to relax and enjoy SA"...crime is crime...not everything is abt race..

  • mart.botha - 2012-10-29 09:07

These 'freedom fighters' are the responsibility of those that have failed them since being handed the power in South Africa in 1994. A well oiled machine is grinding and spinning out of control. This madala attacked, a 94 year old granny raped, and all this insurrection in the face of law and order is not a spinoff of apartheid, it is merely evidence that a sizeable segment of our society has regressed enough to be considered mutants. This comment is directed at all race groups, the quality of individuals has lost out badly because the quantities are out of whack.

  • demi.cooke.7 - 2012-10-29 09:10

Bastards. I would like to put them down head first into a paper shredder

Cowards, three against a 91 year old. Sick sick

  • mshiniboys - 2012-10-29 09:53

You know it is funny how people cry when an old man is attacked but when the apartheid government used to kill youths and displace millions people would braai to it.

      Tobie Vd Vyver - 2012-10-29 10:01

The apartheid is the past, so get over it. So do you condone these barbaric idiots behaviour? If you do, then you're one too!

      mshiniboys - 2012-10-29 10:18

I think this will soon be the past too...in fact it already is.He survived.

      art5SA - 2012-10-29 10:20

Mshiniboy.... Bet you were not even born, when apartheid was the norm!

      gail.rieck.9 - 2012-11-03 16:41

The apartheid government didn't sneak into peoples homes and rape and steal from them. These "brave young lions" think NOTHING of raping their own gogos either. Lets just hope that one day this doesn't happen to your grandparents, these 'things' arn't concerned with race, age or gender.

      george.frangs - 2012-11-26 09:08

Oh right, I forgot we're still living in the 80's. You're late to cut my grass boet...

  • norman.buchalter - 2012-10-29 11:40

I hope Paul Harris reads this article. It is scary things that happen every day in this otherwise physically beautiful land that scare off foreign investment, not the armchair concerns of Ex South Africans who have "gapped it". We may not be over the edge , Mr Harris, but we are hanging on for dear life, many with fingernails being wrenched from their fingers. When you see the 1500 singers willing to assist with education in their townships, do you not stop to think that they are being short-changed by the poilticians who continually take advantage of the happy , unsuspecting nature of their constituents? The singing is lovely indeed, as is the sentiment they hold, but it hides the ugly cracks in society which the citizens are being called upon to overlook or to fix themselves because democracy has failed them.

  • Andrea - 2012-10-29 15:36

And now Govt. wants us to partake in their rehabilitation? I don't think so.

  • Maxodin - 2012-10-30 03:20

Please read this article mr Paul Harris

Such an unfortunate instance. More consideration should go to farmers protecting large properties from crime. The Victim Support Network has a great page on Facebook, full of useful resources and offers services such as trauma counselling to victims like this. www.facebook.com/victimsupportnetwork if anyone would like to take a look.

  • alan.yates.18007 - 2012-11-15 14:59

My father fought the German armies in Africa, Italy, and Germany at the same age that these 'three men with knives' attacked an unarmed 91 year old. Not easy to have 'respect' sometimes.
