Polokwane - A man accused of practising witchcraft burnt to death when his house was torched in Giyani, Limpopo, police said on Friday.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said Tarazeta Mathebula, 79, and his 55-year-old sister-in-law were inside the house, which was set alight by angry residents at about 20:00 on Thursday.

Ramatseba said the woman was seriously injured when residents assaulted her, and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Police arrested seven people - four women and three men - aged between 24 and 46.

"They face charges of murder, attempted murder, public violence and arson and will appear in the Giyani Magistrate's Court on Monday."

  • George - 2012-04-13 18:17

Witchcraft is mild compared to what SCAMRAL are doing. I'd be worried!

  • Frans - 2012-04-13 18:18

Do people really still believe in witchcraft?

      zaatheist - 2012-04-13 18:28

There are still people who believe in God. What makes one religion acceptable and another one unacceptable??? At the end of the day, religion is what you are brainwashed to believe as a child. You then grow up and continue believing what you were force fed or you learn to think for yourself - most religious people, irrelevant of which religion, are incapable of thinking for themselves.

OMG! We are in 2012 and people still believe this???? I dont understand why there is not more attention given to dispell these mythical practises in communities! The mob mentality is just plain "thuggish" behaviour! What a horrific and painful death to enforce on someone because of sheer STUPIDITY!!!!!!!!!!!

Someone asked why we could not do things the way it was done before civilisation came to Africa. Just go to Limpopo and your wish will be fulfilled Mr. Zuma.

  • Cassandra Olivier - 2012-04-13 18:49

There is no such thing as witchcraft its all on the mind if you believe it will happen it will

  • Tanie - 2012-04-13 18:57

Civilization is far from reaching this areas, someone help them to evolve.

      Mark - 2012-04-13 21:29

There is no help for such savagery; only time and education.

  • Jayson - 2012-04-13 19:11

This does not surprise me at all. The trend in this country is if someone has a different belief or may see things in a different light than you do. That automatically gives you the right to become Judge, jury and executioner. And the really sad part is. It only takes one person to get a mob started. Its a sad thing what happened, really sad.

  • Lindani - 2012-04-13 19:21

how embarrased i am to call myslef human being when this is what people still do to other people. for shame on humanity if it has become so easy for you to burn down another human inside their house because you believe they are killing people with "magic powers". the law had better take its cause!

      Glyn - 2012-04-13 20:00

@ Lindani - This is where Europe was a couple of thousand years ago. Stick around, things will improve.

      Glyn - 2012-04-13 20:07

I again call on all South Africans to condemn accusations of witchcraft, to condemn those who make such accusations, and to condemn witch-hunts. I call on the Editor of to publicly support '30 days of advocacy against witch-hunts' - 29 March to 27 April. Please, make a difference, condemn these barbaric acts of violence!
