Pietermaritzburg - An Imbali man, Thamsanqa Ntenza (25), was sentenced to an effective 10 years’ imprisonment yesterday after he admitted to the murder of his girlfriend, Nompilo Ndlovu, on Christmas Day 2013.

In terms of a plea agreement between the state and defence, Ntenza was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment, but five years of his sentence was suspended.

He said in a statement read by his attorney Amanda Hulley, that he was with Ndlovu in his bedroom and they were arguing because he had refused to walk her home.

She started “raising her voice” and he asked her to be quiet since he did not want his parents to hear he had a woman in his room.

“She continued and I got angry. I walked up to her and grabbed her by her throat. When I let go of her throat she fell down. I tried to shake her and realised she was dead,” he said.

Ntenza said he became afraid and tried to get rid of the body. “I tried to burn it behind the house and I threw sand over the body to put the fire out.”

He said the police arrived the next day, found Ndlovu’s body and arrested him.

In mitigation of sentence the court was told that Ntenza was deeply remorseful, capable of rehabilitation, had co-operated with the investigation and his family had tried to assist Ndlovu’s family with funeral expenses.

He has two young children, whom he has been supporting.

Regional court magistrate Bhekizitha Phoswa was told Ndlovu’s family, including her mother, were satisfied with the sentence
