Johannesburg - A man appeared in the Centane Magistrate's Court on Thursday for allegedly raping an 82-year-old woman, Eastern Cape police said.

Captain Jackson Manatha the 25-year-old man was arrested on Sunday shortly after the crime was committed in Qombolo village.

The elderly woman was home alone when a man knocked on her door.

He identified himself as her grandchild and she let him in.

"Once the suspect was inside the house, he demanded money.

As the victim did not have money, he raped her," said Manatha.

The man fled, but residents caught him and handed him to police.

He would be kept in custody until his next court appearance on 17 October.
