East London - A man has been arrested for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl in Zazela village in Ngqamakhwe, in the Eastern Cape, police said on Sunday.

It was alleged that the girl had gone to the toilet below the garden of her home on Saturday, around 07:00, when she was allegedly dragged and raped by the 26-year-old man, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

"The grandmother of the victim went to look for the victim when she failed to return. She met with her granddaughter in the village and the victim broke the silence that she was raped by the suspect."

The girl identified the man and a case of rape was opened at Ngqamakhwe police station.

Police then arrested the man, who was expected to appear in the Ngqamakhwe Magistrate's Court on Monday.
