Man arrested for Hout Bay cop killings

2012-10-15 14:13

Cape Town - A man has been arrested in connection with the killing of two police officers in Hout Bay, Western Cape police commissioner Arno Lamoer said on Monday.

The man, 28, was arrested on Sunday night and would appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, he told reporters in Cape Town.

The two constables were on patrol in Imizamo Yethu on Friday night when they were shot at.

The woman officer, 26, died on the scene. Her male colleague died in hospital on Saturday night.

In a separate attack last week, metro police officer Mpumelelo Xakekile, 50, was shot dead while issuing a fine to a taxi driver in Khayelitsha.

An 18-year-old man will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court later on Monday for the crime.

Lamoer condemned the attacks, and said the police would not be intimidated.

"We will take action. We will arrest and we will go through the process of prosecution."

He revealed that since the start of April, there had been more than 150 attacks on police officers in the line of duty, through shooting, stoning and assault.

"That is really a sad state of affairs because these attacks mean attacks on the state and attacks on the communities that we serve," he said.

Killing of cops and looting goverment money should be treated as high high treason

      mlucejko - 2012-10-15 14:35

There is only 'one answer' to this... For killing a cop, "Automatic Death Penalty" !!! Our cops need protection !!!

      aniken.vader.31 - 2012-10-15 14:39

yo know what? yo udon;t really feel about these cops because of all the issues that they have in their police force..! But if you sit down and actually think about it, those are people that thei EVERYDAY job is to get UP, feed their children, take them to school, and then - place their lives at RISK for all of us! I feel TERRIBLY sorry for them! And I wish all of this crime would just STOP! My belief is still that if ONLY we had people who understood what these human beings go through on a daily basis at the helm of the police and actually CARED we'd ALL be better off..!

      archangel.zerachiel - 2012-10-15 16:03

@mlucejko: If the Police, with all their guns and bullet proof vests NEED protection, what about the ordinary man in the street who has had HIS GUNS TAKEN AWAY BY THE cANCer Government with the full support of the Police? Should they not get more protection? Yes, police should not be getting killed, even though their job risk profile is worse than the average man in the street - but look at the amount of *men in the street* getting killed - people should be questioning this EVEN MORE!! Even WORSE SENTENCES for killing an UNPROTECTED (no gun or bullet proof vest) CIVILIAN. You people need to look at the situation after taking off your blinkers.

      ab.normal.961 - 2012-10-15 16:11

Killing police won't be tolerated, meaningless words. The killings continue. The problem, no respect for the law. They should bring back the POLICE FORCE, fear of the law.

  • lalosr - 2012-10-15 14:29

    Hang him!!

      ally.oh.7 - 2012-10-16 10:29

Right on. He unilaterally decided to execute the cops. Therefore we should unilaterally decide to execute him -- and then carry it out in full view of all the people.

  • anthea.lagrange - 2012-10-15 14:41

How about they let him run down that same road and let the deceased cops' colleagues take pot shots at him? If he survives, it's fate and if he doesn't it's karma.

      archangel.zerachiel - 2012-10-15 16:06

@Athena: that would cause a huge amount of collateral damage as most of those cops cannot shoot very well. Trained with some of them and I think the quality of fire arm skills should rather not be discussed right now.

      anthea.lagrange - 2012-10-15 16:23

      You have a point!

  • jimmy.paterson.549 - 2012-10-15 14:41

    hang him high

  • BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-10-15 14:41

If I were the President of a country, and my police were being attacked and killed, I believe I would have a lot to say about it. Pity we don't have a President.

      archangel.zerachiel - 2012-10-15 16:07

But what about all your UNARMED CITIZENS GETTING KILLED? Should your PSH not have lots to say about that as well.

  • andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-10-15 14:43

There is only one way to bring an end to senseless killings and rapes, and that is to bring back the gallows, as well as public hangings for police killers. I will give you a letter with a police stamp that it will stop!

Hang, draw & quarter this s.o.b. Totally uncalled for murder. About time this country woke up to the fact that these criminals don't give a rat's a$$ about rights of others. Why should we give a rat's a$$ about them? Sick and tired of do-gooders thinking they can "rehabilitate" these lowlives!!

  • schalk.mattheys - 2012-10-15 15:14

Something is most definitely sinister here, an 18 year old just "shoots" two police officers whilst they are on patrol for no reason? Why? What motivates an 18 year old to just shoot two cops? Did he commit a crime and they were trying to apprehend him? Was he being initiated into a gang and as part of his initiation he had to shoot a police officer? Something stinks here, a person does not just shoot two other people, let alone two police officers...I hope this 18 year old gets locked up permanently, without option of release.

      trevor.dean.10 - 2012-10-15 15:36

Please read the article. It says the alleged killer of the two police officers in Hout Bay is 28, not 18. The 18-year-old allegedly killed the metro officer in Khayalitsha.

  • dave.kofang - 2012-10-15 15:19

Hand him over to the community.

  • billy.tong.731 - 2012-10-15 15:28

Bring back the death penalty and hang them.

  • John - 2012-10-15 15:31

My experience with the policy enforcing thugs tells me we are being fed less than half the story by the POLICE! Tell us ALL the facts, not just the ones that make the cops look good. I have found cops to be arrogant overbearing bullies in uniform! Too many corrupt cops tarnish the 10% of uncorrupted PEACE OFFICERS amongst their MEMBERS. I will never call for the POLICE when I am in trouble! Try reporting a crime committed by a cop at a POLICE STATION. You are the criminal! They COVER for each OTHER!

  • Greg.J.M - 2012-10-15 15:50

I hope the courts will make a good example of him and hit him with the full might of the law, unfortunately some judges see fit to release these criminals on bail thereby giving them the freedom to commit more crime, often people blame the police when criminals get bail, once a case gets to court it is out of the hands of the police as they have done their part in arresting the criminal and presenting them to the courts.

  • mmoledis - 2012-10-15 15:59

I would like to appeal to our government to give police more powers, because failing to do so we as a country we will end up having no security at all as no one will ever be happy and encouraged to be a policemen or woman for the fear that they will be risking their lifes for nothing, when a securty official is down in South Afica no body cares but if they can do the same while on their duty there will be lot of noise from our political parties and some community members. Come on South Africans let us support our police officers and protect them too, we do not want this country to be a banana republic whereby every Tom and Jerry can come and play at, NB! PLICE NEED TO BE GIVEN POWERS IN ORDER TO FIGHT CRIME.

  • buwaz - 2012-10-15 16:21

Police r less powered, criminals have no law to follow before shooting a cop, while police does,IPID is there to help reduce police powers, our president n other politician felt intimidated by the best ever police General cele, now our police is crisis ms phiyega can't even motivate or assure her troops, since she took over how many police r killed?
