Durban- A man believed to be a serial rapist responsible for at least five rapes was arrested by police in Empangeni on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Major Zwane said police had arrested the man, along with two others, in the Nseleni area near Empangeni early Thursday morning following a joint operation of the police’s Empangeni Family, Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit and the police’s Crime Intelligence Unit.
Zwane said the 35-year old man would make an offer of employment and through word-of-mouth or social networks, meet his intended victims and then lure them to an isolated spot where they would be threatened with a knife or gun before being raped and robbed.
The five rapes all took place between March and May 2015 in Ngwelezane, Felixton, Melmoth, Stanger and KwesakaMthethwa in the Empangeni area.
Zwane said it was believed the other two men arrested helped connect him with his victims. Zwane said police were not ruling out the possibility that the man had been involved in more rapes.
He said the three men were expected to appear in the Empangeni Magistrate’s court shortly.
