Johannesburg - The Ekurhuleni metro police department (EMPD) arrested a man at a funeral procession on Saturday on charges of impersonating a police officer, a spokesperson said on Sunday.

Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said a member of a tracking company told an EMPD officer about a vehicle displaying EMPD badges with the driver wearing an EMPD baseball cap and a reflective jacket at the procession at the cemetery.

Officers asked for back-up and closed in on the 32-year-old man and his Toyota RunX at the Kromvlei cemetery.

His vehicle had a blue light on the roof and magnetic EMPD insignia on its doors.

He said he had qualified as a pointsman at the metro's training academy in 2007 and had approval from the metro to help with point duty at funeral processions.

He bought the reflective jacket and baseball cap from a company in Robertsham.

He also gave officers what he called a certificate of competency.

Kgasago said he had a licensed 9mm pistol with 13 live rounds.

"The suspect was charged with impersonating a metro police officer at the Brackendowns police station and is expected to appear on Monday at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court," said Kgasago.

Additional charges of fraud are being investigated but verification of the authenticity of the signatures on his confiscated certificate would be necessary.
