Durban - A man accused of murdering a police constable was arrested at Msinga on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

He was found in possession of two revolvers, 26 live rounds of ammunition and an AK-47 rifle thought to have been used in the killing of Constable Philasande Zwane, said Colonel Jay Naicker.

He had been charged with murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and would appear in the Msinga Magistrate's Court Thursday.

Naicker said the firearms would be sent for ballistics tests to establish whether they could be linked to any other crimes.

Earlier arrest

The arrest followed that of Siyabonga Nkala, 25, at the KwaMadala hostel in Boipatong, Gauteng, early in August.

He appeared in the Msinga Magistrate's Court on Tuesday when his case was postponed to 30 September.

The two men allegedly shot dead Zwane, 28, in May, during an operation targeting unlicensed firearms in Msinga.

Naicker said the police were following up information about an unlicensed firearm and went to a house in the area.

"Whilst approaching the identified homestead they came under fire from a group of people who were in the house. Constable Philasande Zwane was shot dead during the shooting and his service pistol was stolen by his killer," he said.
