Johannesburg - A man who allegedly murdered and raped an 80-year-old woman in Craighall Park, has been arrested after being on the run for more than a year, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old man was arrested outside an Alexandra tavern around 16:00 in a sting operation, spokesperson Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha said.

The half-naked body of Rosemary Anne Dowdle was found on Friday September 19 2014 by security guards, who then alerted Parkview police.

"During preliminary investigations, it was established that the deceased’s vehicle had also been stolen in the process. It was later recovered a short distance from the scene, after the suspect abandoned it following an accident with another motorist," Ramovha said.

Police have been investigating the matter for sometime, culminating in the man's arrest on Sunday.

Parkview station commander Colonel Thembelule Kubone praised police for their hard work, saying the man's arrest made the community safer.

The man was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court this week.
