Man arrested for stolen cigarettes

Johannesburg - A store owner has been arrested for alleged possession of stolen cigarettes worth R1m, Johannesburg metro police said.

"The owner of a 'Cash and Carry', a man in his 40s, has been arrested for being in possession of stolen property," spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

Four armed men wearing reflector vests and driving a white Mercedes Benz hijacked the truck carrying the cigarettes on Allandale Road in Midrand on Tuesday morning.

The empty truck was found abandoned on Anne Street.

"A tracker company picked up a signal of the truck and called the JMPD.

A second tracker signal which was attached to the goods led officers to a 'Cash and Carry' in Mikro Lane, Randburg where the cigarettes had already been bought."

The store owner would appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Minnaar said it was hoped the store owner would lead police to the hijackers.
