Johannesburg - A man was shot and wounded in a shoot-out with police in Soweto on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

Captain Pinky Tsinyane said two men driving a hijacked car sped off when police flagged them to stop.

"It is alleged that two suspects were driving a Grey Ford Ranger that was reported hijacked in the early hours of the morning. They sped off when police flagged them to stop," she said.

"A chase ensued and one of the suspects fired shots at the police. They returned fire and wounded one of the suspects on the lower body."

The wounded man was arrested on the scene while the other one fled. Police recovered the Ford Ranger, a 9mm pistol, and a revolver.

"The 19-year-old suspect will be appearing in the Orlando Magistrate's Court soon facing charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearm, and attempted murder."
