Johannesburg - A 40-year-old man has been arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm in Katlehong on the East Rand, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Wednesday.

Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said the man was arrested on Tuesday night after a 9mm pistol with eight bullets and a spare magazine were found hidden in the ceiling of his bedroom in Khumalo Valley.

The serial number on the firearm had been filed off. The man claimed he picked up the firearm.

The weapon was discharged into the air at the weekend and community members informed the metro police about the incident.

"Officers went to his house and he denied owning a gun. They searched the house and found the gun in the ceiling of his bedroom," said Mokheseng.

Hopefully they will be able to link this gun to crimes and charge this guy! Although what is the point really, just another waste of taxpayers money. I equate our justice system to being called into the headmasters office... sitting there for a couple of hours and then being sent away with no consequence! Hmmm.... sounds like schools with no corporal punishment, maybe therein lies the problem? (sarcasm)
