Johannesburg - A man was assaulted when members of two different taxi associations attacked each other on Monday morning in Centurion, Gauteng police said.

Shots were fired during the confrontation around 07:00, but no one was wounded, spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

"The person who fired shots was caught by the other group and assaulted. Police are investigating several charges, including attempted murder and assault with grievous bodily harm. A pistol was seized at the scene for further investigation."

The confrontation was sparked when a group of people travelling in a taxi and a car confronted each other near Southdown Mall in Centurion.

The man was in the car when he pulled out the gun and fired several shots.

The people in the taxi confronted the man and assaulted him with sticks.

"Police were called to the scene to diffuse the situation. A person who was assaulted was taken to the hospital in a serious, but stable condition. Police seized his licenced firearm for further investigation," Dlamini said.

"At this stage, the motive for the attacks is still being investigated. The groups who attacked each other are believed to be members of two different associations operating in the area," he said.
