Johannesburg - A grandfather allegedly killed himself and his 4-year-old grandson when he set their car alight in Azaadville, near Randfontein on Wednesday, Gauteng police said.

"During the day, the boy's father got a call from his father-in-law saying that he has taken the boy and will kill the boy and himself," police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said.

"The father of the boy called the police and gave them the car registration number."

Makhubela said when police eventually spotted the car it was already on fire.

The 65-year-old grandfather and the boy had been burned beyond recognition, he said.

Paramedics said it was understood that members of the public saw the car and extinguished the fire.

When paramedics arrived the man and the boy were still inside the car, but nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead on the scene, ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said.

Makhubela said a motive for the killing was not known.
