Johannesburg - A man was burned beyond recognition when his shack caught fire in Ivory Park on Saturday evening, Johannesburg emergency management services said.

"It looks like he was asleep when the fire started. It was difficult for him to evacuate his shack during the blaze," spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said in a statement.

He said the cause of the fire was believed to be a paraffin stove which was left unattended.

"We therefore would like to urge the communities in the informal settlement to look after their heating and lighting appliances to avoid devastating fire incidents like this one."

Mulaudzi said this was the fifth person to die in a shack fire in Johannesburg over the long weekend.

"We will remain on high alert throughout the weekend to deal with any emergency which might occur."

On Friday an adult and child died in a shack fire in the Waterworks informal settlement in Lenasia.

Their bodies could not be identified as they were burnt beyond recognition, Mulaudzi said.
