Cape Town - A man from Khayelitsha was arrested after 200kg of dagga was found in his possession during a road block in Beaufort West on Saturday, Western Cape police said.

The man's vehicle was stopped at a check point on the Beaufort West/ Aberdeen road and 15 bags of dagga were discovered, said Captain Malcolm Pojie in a statement.

The value of the dagga was estimated at R200 000.

"The dagga was destined for distribution in the Western Cape as the taxi was en route from the Eastern Cape to Cape Town," Pojie said.

The man would appear at Beaufort-West Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Provincial police commissioner lieutenant general Arnoe Lamoer commended the officers involved.

"This seizure will put a damper on drug abuse and the distribution thereof in our province, especially to the youth," he said.

  • arne.verhoef - 2012-03-11 14:05

Dagga, 'drug abuse'? Doubt it lieutenant. How about taking a look at that drug alcohol, and curbing its abuse in your province. Oh wait, marijuana kills tonnes more people than safe, legal, alcohol.

Pathetic. The dude was from Cape Town and it was stash for his personal consumption. 200Kg's is like only a day to two supply for us Capies.

  • dooskop - 2012-03-11 14:24

thats the problem it starts off withweed..then crack...then rapists and murderers'

Tannie, cannabis is not a gateway drug. You have been mislead by primary school teachers, the church, politicians and your parents. Read the studies done on it. The only bad thing is, is that because it is illegal, the criminals are the only major suppliers.

      Buzz - 2012-03-12 09:31

That's the problem. It starts off with ignorance... then hatred... then incarcerating millions of people for ingesting a harmless plant. By the way, get with the 21st century... or the 20th century for that matter. The only thing weed is a gateway to is happiness:)

Let the poor oke go, and go after the tiksters in Cape Town. Dagga smokers are passive though, aren't they? Cowardly cops.

      sachasea - 2012-03-12 13:15

With all due respect Thanda I have to disagree there. We should not treat people who use TIK as criminals. Their lives are already a torturous and disruptive misery. If we want to deal with the problem effectively we need to allocate them proper help to get off those drugs not have them thrown in jail at taxpayers expense, which incidentally would cost more than treating them for their addiction!!! Only full legalization and government regulation can reduce rates of addiction long term. This has already been shown in countries like Portugal, where personal possession of drug use has been decriminalized for over 10 years already. We need new, more appropriate, dare I say it 'revolutionary' legislation to deal with the ever growing problem of drug addiction especially in areas where it is especially prevalent i.e. the Cape Flats.

Pathetic. There is absolutely nothing wrong with weed. Ban alcohol instead. You ever heard of road deaths and violence caused by weed?

  • Khanyi - 2012-03-11 14:36

Same people who confiscate Ganja, is dem same people who use it...

"A man from Khayelitsha was arrested after 200kg of dagga was found in his possession during a road block in Beaufort West on Saturday, Western Cape police said." It was further reported that the entire station force was enjoying a peaceful Sunday snacking on Chocolate and Pizza and telling each other jokes.

Thank you cops for arresting a non-violent "criminal", while turning a blind eye to rapists and murderers. Thank you for spending our hard earned tax money prosecuting and housing this guy an overcrowded prison system. Thank you for enforcing an archaic law that is based on fairytales.

      Tony Lapson - 2012-03-12 10:12

Thank you for your awesome website!

      sachasea - 2012-03-12 13:04
