Pretoria - A 35-year-old man was arrested on Monday after he was caught trying to sell two rhino horns in Amalinda, East London police said.

Police spokesperson Stephen Marais said police and the green scorpions - in conjunction with the department of economic development and environmental affairs - arrested the man at a shopping centre.

Marais said the combined estimated value of the horns was about R200 000.

"This arrest comes as a continued effort to curb the illegal possession and trade of rhino horn and elephant tusks in the province."

The man would be charged under the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act, which carries a sentence of R100 000 or five years imprisonment and three times the commercial value of the species concerned, Marais said.
