Johannesburg - A man has died after he was struck by a train near the Balgowan Railway in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands on Thursday, said paramedics.

The man and his friend were walking along the train track close to the station when the train hit him, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

He said it was not immediately clear how the man landed in front of the moving train.

"Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found the extensively injured body of a man in his twenties lying on the ground. He died on impact," said Botha.

His friend escaped unharmed but was visibly traumatised.
