Johannesburg - A Pretoria man died after being tortured allegedly at the hands of police, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said on Thursday.

The 28-year-old man was picked up by police in Ga-Rankuwa on Wednesday and was taken to the Chamdor police station, where the alleged torture took place, said spokesperson Moses Dlamini in a statement.

It was unknown why he was taken to the station.

Dlamini said after the incident, the man was taken to the Leratong Hospital but was declared dead.

A post mortem would be carried out soon.

Its amazing how everyday the police makes it more easier not to trust them... Talking on my own experience, in Johannesburg I've been thrown against my car because I was chilling in a park, I had to pay R500 just for them to leave... seriously...

      sharon.truebodyvice - 2012-09-14 07:58

Dont try and report it .......then they will throw you in jail ........I give up.....or I need a gun

      nicholas.graan - 2012-09-14 08:24

I thought it was only the Apartheid police who were supposed to do this kind of thing?

      stefan.kruger.1297 - 2012-09-14 10:11

For your information Riotousr, I was just chilling in a park, where apparently my car wasn't allowed... so take your finger and point it to yourself please... You're probably one of those racists from the ANC blaming everyone for everything.. hahaha!! its ok son... you'll be fine.. now go eat a lolly...

Sounds really dodge. How can you just torture people? Power in the wrong hands is seriously scary and should be reconsidered.

Public office have certain duties, the police office has a duty to protect citizens. There are so many cases in the past that deals with this exact issue. All I can say is goodluck.

Unbridled lawlessness within the ranks of law enforcement and so much crime to deal with in our society; Our Contry sounds like a post dooms day movie.

  • Pete7930 - 2012-09-14 08:38

Its ok to kill someone, as long as you're not a policeman!

  • mastersvoice - 2012-09-14 08:38

The Zuma regime is seamlessly pushing us back into the dark days of Apartheid! Yesterday in Parliament he smugly admitted that minority groups have fewer rights in his version of democracy! The ANC has failed South Africa by putting him into a position of power. It is time for change.

      gym.buddy.9 - 2012-09-14 08:55

That's just silly reasoning.. What does the president have to do with the ruinous behavior that was reflected by this certain police man? It is not like the brutality was instigated by him.. I think it's high time you got rid of your slave-mentality and looked at the bigger picture.. Stop blaming government for other people's misfortunes..

      mastersvoice - 2012-09-14 10:33

Strange comment gym.buddy.9. The president appoints the people that run the country's police force, so he is ultimately accountable. If police brutality were isolated incidents, your comment may have been valid to a degree, but clearly it is not. Recent events serve to prove my point, but too many normal, law-abiding South Africans have been exposed to their aggression for it to be deemed "slave-mentality" (not really sure what you meant by that statement either, actually). So let's look at the bigger picture: the President was effectively appointed by the ANC. He effectively usurped his predecessor. His appointed police commissioners have been fired for corruption, fraud and numerous other nefarious reasons. Under his current appointed commissioner 34 people were shot and killed by police. In KwaZulu Natal a group of cops were found to have been running a hit squad. Numerous cases of police brutality and torture have been reported by the public Zuma is supposedly serving. The only "silly reasoning" I see, is by anyone defending Zuma's hand in all of this...

      gym.buddy.9 - 2012-09-14 20:34

The issue at hand here is not that i'm defending the president; rather the fact that everyone is quick to point fingers when things go wrong, but yet continue to vote the same party into power. Like you said, these matters are isolated.. And you also mentioned the Marikana Massacre - which in my biased opinion was necessary to disperse large groups of miners armed with spears, pangas and other assorted weaponry.. People seem to neglect the fact that 3 police officers were hacked to death and disarmed off their firearms, which were later used to shoot at heavily armed police officials.. Is it to ok to say that the police acted wrongfully because more miners were killed than police? How about we first look at what caused the shootings.. I honestly don't know much about the case about the policemen who were running a crime ring, so I'll not comment much on that.. But I'm sure they acted on their own and the president had no knowledge about this..

Few weeks ago they were heroes for killing 34 people, all of a sudden they are being blasted for killing one guy. What's wrong with this picture? @news24 readers.

      Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-09-14 09:26

Mzakes - big difference! the miners were armed and a threat! this one was in custody. Do you understand now?

Its so heartbreaking these days that our parents and siblings are dying at the hands of armed forces. We are in the spirit of commemorating the death of Steven Bantubonke Biko who lost his life after being brutally murdered by police. Yet still in this days the very same thing still persist.
