Man dies after falling from balcony

2011-07-27 09:27

Johannesburg - A man was killed and another critically injured when they fell from a sixth floor balcony at a Richmond apartment complex in Johannesburg early Wednesday morning, paramedics said.

The men were part of a group of people attending a party in the flat, Netcare 911spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said.

"The men had been on the balcony of the apartment and had purportedly leant on the balcony wall which gave way. Both men plunged to the concrete below, one landing on top of the other."

Wicks said the man who hit the ground first died before paramedics arrived. The other man sustained critical injuries and was carried inside the building.

Paramedics found the 19-year-old man sustained limb fractures as well as severe spinal trauma.

He was stabilised before being transported by ambulance to the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital.

The cause of the accident would be investigated by police, Wicks said.

    Probably dopped up...

      Kappie - 2011-07-27 10:13

are you just stupid, ignorant or just plain illiterate? read:"The men had been on the balcony of the apartment and had purportedly leant on the balcony wall which gave way." sies on you

  • Paralegal - 2011-07-27 09:46

"The other man sustained critical injuries and was carried inside the building." - wonder who carried him inside the building?! Hopefully the paramedics otherwise he could be paralysed for life considering he suffered spinal injuries!

      Paralegal - 2011-07-27 10:22

@Tinkie, terrible story! Glad to hear your son is fine now. You must have had quite a scare, as did he I'm sure!!

      Bill - 2011-07-27 10:32

Tinkie, I would suggest a Netcare 911 subscription. ambulance and paramedics there in as flash! Relying on a government ambulance is a joke! - 2011-07-27 12:29 this number to phone..if i 'call' it sends a msg to them and they phone back in 5 seconds - no lies..i tried it twice (by mistake) ... *120*880*911# its for emergencies

Grazy - 2011-07-27 15:05, I saved that one to my phone thanks...... but if this is fooling around be ready for a serious pain in the backside when I need that one. But I don't think you will fool around. :-)

  • Kappie - 2011-07-27 10:11

@daaivarksetier,,sad but true, unfortunatley not ment for the forum......RIP ma man, do we then hold the building owners liable or accountable?

      O-Kay - 2011-07-27 10:49

      Good question.

  • maxwell.motloung - 2011-07-27 10:26

Its sad that you guys say such cause that man who passed away was a friend of mine. I mean really now, show a little respect

      cromagnon - 2011-07-27 10:40

You wont find a lot of respect in here, just idiots hiding behind keyboards saying things they never will in public.

      cromagnon - 2011-07-27 10:41

@subtle59 - what does his race matter?

      O-Kay - 2011-07-27 10:50

      Condolences Maxwell, this is tragic.

      Worldwise - 2011-07-27 12:38

Agree Maxwell. Unfortunately the idiot anonymity complex takes over when someone believes they will not be caught saying or doing something they would never do in public. They hide behnd their keyboards on forums and on the road they do as they wish in their cars believing they will never be caught. I have followed some of these idiots on the roads and when confronted you should see them shake. Cowards.

  • Gungets Tuft - 2011-07-27 10:37

The News24 comments section sometimes makes me want to puke. You don't know them, you know nothing of the circumstances, yet you still see fit to comment on the death of of a son, brother, husband, friend. If you have nothing decent to say, close the article, go on your way. Pretend it is a funeral where people are grieving - would you stop and make these comments to the mourners. If not, and I doubt you would, then stop being morons and cowards here. GO AWAY. Maxwell - sympathies bru.

      Tinkie - 2011-07-27 10:47

Thanks Gungets. I was thinking the same thing. It makes no difference what race a person is, this is still a tragedy, especially for the family and friends. It is about time that race was put aside and that the human factor came into play. There are good and bad in every race and tragedy can and does effect everyone at some stage or the other. Maxwell, sympathies from us too. I really hope the other guy makes a full recovery and that a valuable lesson is learnt from this story FOR EVERYONE about how easily things can happen.

      daaivark - 2011-07-27 11:00

Pecisely. Well said. As for the knuckle calling himself "subtle", who's about as subtle as a ton of bricks... What a jerk!

      1boer1taxi - 2011-07-27 11:40

      eeeeeeeeee subtle was right

      subtle59 - 2011-07-27 11:44

Daaivark you are a fence sitter.

      daaivark - 2011-07-27 12:02

Anything but, subtle. How on earth you could conclude that from my many comments God only knows and I'm sure he is uncertain at times.

      Grazy - 2011-07-27 15:11

Daai vark, :-) skerp. Condolances to Maxwel and the family. But I must admit the first thought that came up was of a badly maintained building occupied by blacks. Simple reality of today.

  • Daryl - 2011-07-27 11:03

It's stories like this that make me always 'test' a balcony railing before leaning on it.

      O-Kay - 2011-07-27 11:07

@Daryl, call me paranoid, but so do I (overactive imagination)

      Worldwise - 2011-07-27 12:41

I do too. Don't trust any balconies. Avoid them if I can.

      Matt :-) - 2011-07-27 12:50

@ Worldwise - yup, same here.

  • Ndamu - 2011-07-27 11:26

I can't believe how insensitive some people are. than man was my friend and uncle!! oh, and daaivarksetier, eat a dick.

      Viparo - 2011-07-27 12:27

Some people think it's funny to make fun of things like this. I don't understand why, but I think it has something to do with their painful childhood. Just ignore them.

      Worldwise - 2011-07-27 12:42

Condolences Ndamu. Unfortunately the idiot anonymity complex takes over when someone believes they will not be caught saying or doing something they would never do in public. They hide behnd their keyboards on forums and on the road they do as they wish in their cars believing they will never be caught. • Jessica - 2011-07-27 11:29

I'm really glad you removed that idiot subtle59's stupid insensitive comments. Really? What a douchebag. It's sad that accidents happen to the good people.

      Fedup - 2011-07-27 11:53

      Well said

  • Tumelo - 2011-07-27 11:41

Is this wat humanity has boiled up to? To ridicule the loss of somebody's life? Isnt it the same as pushing the victim off the balcony urself? WOW..Im appauled...Ppl are ignorant enuf to even seek facts first but then again even dat doesnt give any rights to ridicule somebody who just lost their life...Tendani was a good friend of mine and those who knew him mourn the loss of a soldier at heart...I thank you God for lending us your angel, May his perfect soul rest in peace til we meet him again.

      Bongani - 2011-07-27 16:53

He will RIP for only GOD knows why he needed his angel back to deepest condolences to his family

      nrgigaba - 2011-07-27 17:16

Is this the world we live in today? It's shocking how people can be so mercyless and say such things about a person who was suddenly and unexpectedly been striped of their life, I just wonder if the same comments would of been said if this was someone close to them. Young man Rest In Peace!!!

  • Kamogelo - 2011-07-27 11:45

All this fools(morentebo,Mad man,subtle59) who make fun of this accidents and tragical death probably never lost a close family member(eg Parent or sibling),Wait till it happens to people close to you, then come back and say the sh** u saying now,u guys are gonna experience a tough life and you going to regret the senseless things u said. 'motho ke motho ka batho'. This sorts of accidents can happen to anyone, either drunk or not. Condolences to the family and frnds. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE

      O-Kay - 2011-07-27 12:18

@subtle59, The 59 must be your IQ, just go away!

      Worldwise - 2011-07-27 12:45

Hey Subtle59, I'm a farmer and I feel for the guys that fell from the balcony and their families. There are decent black people in this country.

  • Brendan - 2011-07-27 12:04

    Concrete poisoning

  • Papsak - 2011-07-27 12:16

Lesson #1: Don't drink and play near water. Lesson#2: Don't drink and play with fire Lesson# 3: Don't drink and fiddle with your cellphone (you may end up calling your ex-lover(s) and make all sorts of declarations Lesson#4: Dont drink and play in balconies (you will fall hard and die).

      O-Kay - 2011-07-27 12:20

They were freakin' leaning against the balcony wall. I'm pretty sure the alcohol (if there was any) in their system didn't weaken the structure. Stop being so rude!

      Viparo - 2011-07-27 12:25

Lesson #1 : Read an article properly before dishing out your life lessons. How, in any way, does their drinking weaken a balcony that gave way? Hmmm?

      Worldwise - 2011-07-27 12:48

Would love to meet you subtle 59. Bet you're a weeny little coward hiding behind your keyboard and occasionally behind the wheel of your car.

      1boer1taxi - 2011-07-27 12:59

Yes and i am black belt.

  • Patty S - 2011-07-27 12:30

The deceased and his family are well respected people in our community. They make and has made a difference in the lives of a lot of people with whom they come into contact. It is sad that an unseen occurrance befell them, as this could have happened to anyone. The deceased was a role role model to alot of kids at the school he attended and also to his siblings. They looked up to him as a leader. He will be sadly missed. To his parents, you have raised a wonderful, respectable child and we praise you for that. As parents we all share your grief. May the God of comfort be with you and your family on this very sad occasion. Patty Schwarp Midrand High School.

      Worldwise - 2011-07-27 12:49

My condolences. May their families and friends find peace. A great pity when good role models are no longer there. Peace and respect.

      O-Kay - 2011-07-27 14:27

My condolences to the family and friends of the deceased man and a speedy and full recovery to the injured man.

  • SAGirl - 2011-07-27 13:15

@ WAYNE: You are a PIG! Have a little respect for a person's life. Put yourself in his family's shoes - still rolling on the floor laughing?? Grow up!

  • Galula - 2011-07-27 13:55

This goes to show how some buildings may have outlived their design life or even being underdesigned. Civil Engineers will tell you that balconies should not collapse by having people leaning on them especially for high rise buildings. Really SAD and I hope the Engineering Council of South Africa will investigate this matter thouroughly and blacklist those that put engineering proffession into shame!

      MissMaja.M - 2011-07-27 15:32

its Milpark, which is a good conditioned apartment block in auckland park. sadley, majority that stay in milpark are students. which is scary cause these are all kids.

  • MissMaja.M - 2011-07-27 13:55

the man was a young student btw, a young, very creative, highly respected by his fellow students. a loss of a child is no laughing matter, a loss of a young human being who had a bright future, is no laughing matter. when death befalls apon a family, it is no laughing matter! the day you loose a child, brother, young friend i dare you to still be laughing! I for one highly doubt anyone would dare to laugh at you! Show respect, if you dont have it, dont say anything, cause life has a funny twisted way of getting back to you. I Dont wish it apon you, but i know, karma never fails to teach lessons to those who think they know best! RIP Tendai "smurf" R.

      O-Kay - 2011-07-27 14:29
