Johannesburg - A man died after his car crashed into the back of a truck on the M1 north just before the Woodmead Drive exit, in Sandton early Saturday morning, paramedics said.

The 48-year-old man was found dead in his vehicle after the crash, ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said.

A witness told paramedics that when the car struck the back of the truck, the front of the vehicle broke up, leaving pieces of the wreckage strewn along the highway for several hundred metres.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

"Family members had been travelling a short while behind [the car] and had come across the horrific sight," Jackson said.

A counsellor was called to the scene to assist them.

The truck driver was not injured in the accident.
