Cape Town - One man died and 25 people were left homeless after a fire tore through a section of Wallacedene outside Cape Town, the city's disaster operations spokesperson said on Friday.

The fire destroyed five backyard dwellings and damaged two formal dwellings from 22:30 on Thursday, leaving the 25 people displaced, Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said.

The man who died in the blaze had not been identified yet.

"The City’s disaster response teams will provide humanitarian and social relief aid today [Friday]," said Solomons-Johannes.

The cause of the fire would also be investigated.
