Johannesburg - A man died and two others were injured when their bakkie hit a tree in Springs on the East Rand, said emergency workers on Friday.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the force of the crash ripped open the passenger side of the vehicle.

"The man [who'd been sitting in the passenger seat] suffered extensive injuries. He died on the scene," said Jackson.

The other two occupants suffered moderate injuries.

They were stabilised on the scene before being transported to the Far East Rand Hospital.

"It's not clear what caused the driver to lose control of the bakkie, but the vehicle spun off the road and came to rest against the tree," said Jackson.

Police are investigating.
