Man dies in head-on crash

Johannesburg - A 41-year-old man died and five others were injured when two cars collided head-on near Mahikeng, the North West public safety department said on Sunday.

Spokesperson Lesiba Moses Kgwele said the crash occurred on Saturday, when a Ford Ikon collided with a BMW on the N18 between Mahikeng and Vryburg.

"It is alleged that a Ford Ikon with five occupants that was from Mahikeng heading towards Setlagole collided head-on with a BMW that driving in the opposite direction," he said.

The 41-year-old man was passenger who was in the front seat of the Ford Ikon.

He was declared dead at the scene of the accident while the driver of the BMW who was alone was rushed to Victoria Private Hospital in Mahikeng with critical injuries.

"The 35-year-old driver of the Ford Ikon, a 10-year-old boy and youths in their 20s were rushed to Mahikeng Provincial Hospital with serious injuries." Kgwele said rescue teams had to use the Jaws- of- Life to free the bodies from the wreckages.

"Speeding and drunken driving are suspected to have caused the accident," he said.

    And the moral of the story is that you don't play chicken with ANY BMW - it might be a blue light travelling under cover and they take no prisoners. Alternatively it could be an arrogant VIP who usually has a chauffeur and is now rushing to get somewhere on their own. Alcohol - mmm. Speed double mmm. Which is the faster car?

    South Africa does not regard Drinking and driving as a serious offence and offenders are not scared of the law.Drinking and driving should be prohibited at all cost.Hasher sentences should be considered for offenders.How could a sober minded person drive on the opposite lane.Innocent people are always victims and is thouht provoking.Almost all the experienced accidents happened at night and some in the early morning.Can't we atleast for our own safety stop driving at night particularly at this time of the year.Guys this is serious.
