Durban - A farmworker was killed on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast when the tractor he was driving in overturned on Wednesday, paramedics said.

Robert McKenzie, spokesperson for the provincial Emergency Medical Service, said the accident occurred on a sugar farm about 5km inland from the resort town of Uvongo.

He said the reasons for the tractor overturning were not immediately known.

A woman also sustained minor injuries in the accident that occurred shortly before midday. She was treated on scene and did not require hospitalisation.

McKenzie said it appeared that the tractor overturned as it was going down an embankment.

Uvongo is about 5km north of the popular resort town of Margate.
