Johannesburg - An elderly man has died with his dogs in his burning house after he rushed inside to try and save them.

Steve Small, 84, apparently thought he could still make it into the house to save the pets, reported Beeld.

The fire started in his Springs home at about 08:00 on Tuesday. Small and his wife Rika, 79, managed to get out in time.

Small then apparently thought the fire was not too bad and went back inside to rescue his two dogs and five parrots.

“We informed the fire brigade and they were there within minutes, but it was too late,” said a member of the community policing forum.

The fire was believed to have started in the main bedroom and quickly spread through the ceiling to the rest of the house.

The roof collapsed and the house and furniture were badly damaged by the flames, smoke and water.

Small’s body was found along with his two dead dogs in the bathroom.

It looked like they had sought refuge there from the flames.

Small’s wife was taken to hospital for treatment for light burn wounds and smoke inhalation.
