Johannesburg - A man in his 30s has drowned in the Vaal Dam, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Saturday.

Vaal Dam station commander Dick Manten said in a statement that the NSRI duty crew received a report of a drowning in progress just before 16:00 on Friday.

"On arrival on-scene NSRI rescue swimmers were deployed into the water to free dive search for a local man aged in his 30s that had gone missing in the water."

The man's body was recovered from the water and he was declared dead on the scene.

"The body of the man has been taken into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and police have opened an inquest docket," Manten said.
